The Time.com website<\/a> and several other sources<\/a> are reporting a circulation of fake “I don’t have to wear a face mask” cards, better known as a “Face Mask Exempt Card.”<\/p>\n

Face Mask Exemption ID Cards Are Going Viral and the Department of Justice Says They’re Fake<\/a><\/h4>\n

Recently, \u201cface mask exempt\u201d cards have appeared on social media, claiming the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has cleared certain individuals from wearing protective face coverings to stem the spread of COVID-19. This week, the DOJ declared\u00a0that it has not issued and does not endorse any such identification.<\/p>\n

Many images of \u201cface mask exempt\u201d cards circulated online include the statement: \u201cWearing a face mask posses a mental and\/or physical risk to me. Under the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) I am not required to disclose my condition to you.\u201d Many images also include the DOJ reporting number, the DOJ\u2019s seal and the warning: \u201cIf found in violating of the ADA you could face steep penalties.\u201d<\/p>\n

The U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office of the Middle District of North Carolina posted an example of one of these cards on Friday,\u00a0tweeting, \u201cFraudulent Facemask Flyers, \u2018Exempt\u2019 Cards not Authorized by U.S. Department of Justice.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

According to the New York Daily News<\/a>, these cards “started popping up on a Facebook page run by anti-mask group, the Freedom to Breathe Agency.”<\/p>\n

Then, the U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office for the District of Maine posted a tweet<\/a> showing an example of another card that has been circulating in that state.<\/p>\n
