An Army National Guard unit returned to the hotel that they were staying in. They received the news. They had to pack their gear and check out of the hotel. They just come back from a mission involving crowd control. The city has been holding those rooms for National Guard\u2026 Serving in support of coronavirus response.<\/p>\n

The Army National Guard unit complied and relocated. The Army is looking to move funds dedicated to drills and field training exercises in order to support National Guard lodging accommodations.<\/p>\n

The soldiers had been staying at the Marriott Marquis, in downtown D.C. and across the street from the district\u2019s convention center, where Guardsmen were meant to sleep while working in local hospitals or in the COVID-19 overflow facility in the convention center itself.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was very sudden to me, too,\u201d McCarthy said. \u201cI heard about it this morning. It was not communicated to us directly.\u201d<\/p>\n

McCarthy said the Army will be tapping into funds that are generally used to support drill periods and field exercises to cover Guard troops\u2019 expenses while they\u2019re in D.C. Utah is one of 11 states that has sent troops to help with crowd control during the past week of protests.<\/p>\n

Bowser followed up Friday morning by sending a letter to President Trump requesting the withdrawal of out-of-state National Guard troops from the district. As D.C. is a federal territory, the federal government can request troops from other states, but the mayor has no control of their mobilization.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
