Police determine Waynesboro man was killed in self-defense, file no charges<\/strong><\/p>\n WAYNESBORO, Va. (WHSV) \u2014 Investigators have determined that a Waynesboro man found dead of stab wounds last weekend was killed in self-defense, and no charges will be filed.<\/p>\n According to a joint statement from the Waynesboro Police Department and the Waynesboro Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office, they concluded the killing of Marshal Elwood Staton, Jr. was justified.<\/p>\n Just before 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 23, Waynesboro police responded to a home in the 300 block of Yale Drive for a 911 call about a domestic violence situation in process. When officers got to the home, they found a woman and her adult son suffering from head injuries and a third person, identified as Staton, Jr., dead from what appeared to be stabbed wounds.<\/p>\n Over nearly a week of investigation, Waynesboro detectives gathered evidence and interviewed witnesses to figure out exactly what happened.<\/p>\n Autopsy results for Staton also came back on May 26 from the Medical Examiner’s Office in Roanoke, determine his official cause of death.<\/p>\n What police say happened is this. Staton forcibly entered the home of his 57-year-olwHSV<\/a>d ex-girlfriend on Saturday evening and started attacking her and her 31-year-old son with a wooden baseball bat.<\/p>\n Police say he struck them each multiple times, causing blunt force head injuries. During the course of his attack, the son fought back, stabbing Staton multiple times with a knife in self-defense.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n 1 \/ 0 \/ 0 Update: Woman claims self-defense in Wednesday fatal shooting<\/strong><\/p>\n Ashlynd Huffman Payne County Sheriff Kevin Woodward told the News Press Wednesday that Armstrong called 911 at 8:21 a.m. and told the dispatcher she had shot Atkinson in the head. The shooting occurred in the 3100 block of S. Twin Mounds Road in Yale.<\/p>\n Etherington said Armstrong claimed self-defense in the shooting.<\/p>\n Everything Armstrong told the District Attorney’s Office about why she shot Atkinson, and the events leading up to it would have given her the right to claim self-defense, he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n 1 \/ 0 \/ 0 Mississippi AG drops charge against ex-cop indicted for killing man, citing self-defense<\/strong><\/p>\n The Mississippi attorney general said Thursday that a manslaughter charge will be dropped against a white former police officer in the October 2015 shooting death of an African American man because her office reviewed the case and concluded the officer acted in self-defense.<\/p>\n The killing of Ricky Ball sparked protests in 2015 in Columbus, a mostly black city of 23,000 in northeast Mississippi.<\/p>\n Republican Lynn Fitch became attorney general in January. Her office said in a statement Thursday to WCBI-TV that it reviewed thousands of documents in the case and concluded there was not evidence to prosecute the former officer, Canyon Boykin.<\/p>\n \u201cIn fact, all evidence, including forensics and the sworn statements of four separate MBI investigators, points to necessary self-defense,\u201d said Fitch\u2019s statement, which did not mention the race of Boykin or Ball.<\/p>\n MBI is the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n 1 \/ 0 \/ 0 Trifecta again, Delta Whiskies and Whiskettes.
