  • Another “IRS Thing” Update

Some additional revelations regarding the ongoing IRS scandal that came out in the past 24 hours:

But again, folks:  “don’t worry – be happy”.  Everything is under control.  The Administration has only your best interests in mind.  They have investigated the matter and found that all this IRS brouhaha was due to “two ‘rogue’ employees in the agency’s Cincinnati office”.

Yeah.  Right.  If you believe that last claim, I have this bridge.  And I can make you a really great deal on it.

  • Even More on that “IRS Thing”

It’s beginning to look like the politically-motivated abuses at the IRS have been around for a while longer than originally thought.  And it also looks like they may be a bit more expansive – both organizationally and in scope – than originally reported.

Here new highlights that have been reported over the last 24 hours or so:

Yes, the above appears to draw a rather troubling picture.  But don’t worry.  The Administration has everything under control.  Nothing to see here; move along.  “Pay no attention to the man behind the screen.”

Or the names on the “enemies list”.

  • Not a good week to be the President

Well it isn’t even Wednesday yet and already President Obama is having some serious migraines.  First there were the Benghazi whistle blowers (and apparently there are even more waiting in the wings) whose testimony is both scathing and damning.  Then there was the IRS scandal, in which the IRS targeted both conservative (specifically but not limited to the TEA party), and Jewish groups.  NOW there is news out of the Associated Press that they had tons of their phone records seized in an apparent dragnet to find leaks.  If he wasn’t already in hot water he sure is now, and the shuckin an jivin isn’t cutting the mustard that it used to.  Many of the journalists and news services that the Obama administration could count on as go to guys are starting to ask very tough questions.  Watching Jay Carney or the President’s most recent press briefings look down right uncomfortable.

Let’s deconstruct some of this real quick to see just how much trouble the President is in.  Let’s start with the big one last week; Benghazi.  At first glance it’s pretty straight forward, someone screwed up and people died.  Ask any Joe that ever had a 2LT call for fire and they’ll tell you it happens a lot more than we’d like to admit.  But there’s more to it than that.  We know for instance that Tyrone Wood’s team from Global Response Staff (GRS) were clearly aware of the attack at the consulate in Benghazi at 2140, and were ordered ordered by higher not to go.  They left anyway at 2205 local.  We know that Glen Doherty’s team was actually in Tripoli, and had to bribe or even hijack a plane to go to Benghazi.  We know that an SF LTC was ordered to stand down by higher (presumably AFRICOM) and said to the acting Chief of Mission “this is the first time the diplomats had more balls than the military.”  We know that Ambassador Stevens and Sean Smith were overcome by a petroleum fire in their safe room after the compound was breached, and we know both were dead by the end of the night.  The ride back to the CIA annex by Woods’ team was under fire and one of the vehicles had flat tires but nonetheless made it to the compound where they received sporadic fire all night.  At some point during this Doherty’s team managed to make it into the compound before the final assault which included mortar rounds began.  When it was over Woods and Doherty were dead.

What followed was undeniably a cover-up for political purposes.  A really shitty video was blamed and the denials for support were covered up.  UN ambassador Susan Rice became an unwitting pawn in this and went on all the Sunday talk shows with this truly ridiculous story, which we already knew was wrong.    From all that we’ve been able to glean they knew within 24 hours that it was Ansar al-Sharia, and they knew that this was specifically a terrorist attack.  White-wash or cover up, the American people were lied to, and they kept on lying to us.  Even now they’re making like this is all politics.  It begs the question if they’ve lied about this monumental goof, what else aren’t they telling the truth about.

And then there’s that IRS bit.  See this is actually the most serious for the President and his team.  Why?  Well look at the first bullet point of Article 2 of the Nixon Articles of Impeachment.  As Joe Biden might say “it’s a big F**king deal.”  The fact that he even joked about it in 2009, is all the more disturbing.  Asking a Jewish group “what you feel about Israel,” or asking a conservative group who their donors are is not only highly irregular, but flat out illegal.  The key words being used for this scrutiny should have everyone’s jaw dropping.  Giving undue scrutiny, or harassment to a group concerned our president is violating the constitution is extremely disturbing.  More than that we’re now learning that this wasn’t just a few low level joe schmos, but high level people were aware of this program, and if they did not encourage it they certainly did nothing to stop it.  Potentially the head of the IRS may have lied to congress in May of 2012.  The president is trying to downplay it saying that investigation is needed, but there’s already been one, and it’s pretty clear what happened if not whose behind it.

Then there’s that little bit about the AP.  Now as far as we know none of the phones were tapped, but as many as 300 reporters may have been effected.  In the journalist world nothing, and I mean nothing will make them go on the attack like even the insinuation that someone’s spying on them.  Keep in mind that this can not happen without the Attorney General, Eric Holder signing off on it.  This was all done in secret, without anyone at AP’s knowledge, and is potentially violating the First Amendment.  This is pretty important too, because if there has been one group covering for Obama more than anyone else, it has been the press.  Stories that might be considered embarrassing to the Obama administration have for years not received the full attention of the press with a few notable exceptions.  I truly think these days are over.  Whatever else happens from here on out the Obama administration is going to have a lot of explaining to do.

So where does that leave us?  Well Benghazi is most definitely not a “sideshow,”  and despite what some say, help could have been given, if the administration acted immediately after the first attack, and could have helped to fend off the final attack.  If there truly was no help available then why in the world were so many commands caught with their pants down when everyone on the ground clearly stated they needed more security not less?  With The IRS scandal, well need I remind you that is an impeachable offense (not making this up).  Will the president be impeached?  Probably not, but it is possible.  At the very least it will get congress off their asses and taking a close look at how the Gub’ment is being run.  We might have a very real, and practical example of Big Government being so big it literally does not know what it’s doing, or we might have the truly dirtiest part of Chicago politics at play.  Either one is not good for “We the People.”  Lastly we have the AP scandal.  While in itself this is perhaps a minor event in the era of the PATRIOT Act, do not be surprised if there’s serious push back on this one.  Nothing chills a reporter’s bones like the federal government scaring away their souses, and potentially censoring them.

In my personal humble opinion I think Obama is going to wish he hadn’t gotten reelected.  His second term is not starting off great, and his Dodge Dip Dive Duck and Dodge routine isn’t working anymore.  With Fast and Furious, a DOJ that suppressed a voter intimidation case, a DHS that refuses to enforce immigration, a total overhaul of health care that gives frightening powers to non-doctors, an AG that was held in contempt of congress (a first in history), A stagnant recovery, “Green Jobs” that are just a very expensive way to waste money, and a national debt that is not getting any better any time soon. . . Well to say that things are going to look pretty bad for his legacy is something of an understatement.  The word Impeachable is actually not out of the realm of possibility sadly enough.  Of course if that ever were to happen, Joe “fire a shotgun in the air” Biden will be our new president.  I don’t know about you but I wouldn’t trust that man to run a latrine detail.

  • Yet More About That “IRS Thing”

Remember that “IRS thing” Doc Baily and I have each written about previously here at TAH?  You know, where private advocacy groups were apparently targeted for “special attention” by the IRS based on political philosophy, ethnicity, or  because they “contradict the Administration’s public policies”?

Well, it’s possible that’s not all that was going on.  According to an article at the Daily Caller yesterday, it appears that information might have also been “leaked” by a person or persons at the IRS for partisan political purposes.  Specifically, it appears that paperwork showing a donation made by GOP Presidential candidate Mitt Romney to the National Organization for Marriage (which received a large amount of airplay during the last Presidential campaign) may have been leaked by the IRS.

If you’re thinking that’s illegal – you’re correct.  See the Daily Caller article for details.

Separately, in a book written well before this latest IRS brouhaha became public, former SECDEF Donald Rumsfeld indicated that corporate executives often refrain from public criticism of the President or his policies out of fear of possible future retaliation by government agencies.   He indicates that corporate executives often considered possible actions by the IRS, SEC, congressional committees, and other government agencies before voicing public opposition.

Rumsfeld does not come out and state that he has knowledge of such abuse.  However, the implication is reasonably clear:  corporate executives have seen enough “temporal coincidences” between public statements against Presidential positions or polices and additional regulatory scrutiny to notice – and to be wary.

Stay tuned.  This looks to be getting “curioser and curioser” with each passing day.

  • More About that “IRS Thing”

It seems that those questionable IRS activities that Doc Bailey wrote about the other day appear to be a little broader than just a targeting of Conservative advocacy groups for auditing.  The Washington Post reports that a somewhat broader group of organizations was apparently targeted for “special attention” by our “esteemed” Tax Lords.  What other groups, you might ask? Well, I’ll let the Post tell you:

The documents, obtained by The Washington Post from a congressional aide with knowledge of the findings, show that on June 29, 2011, IRS staffers held a briefing with senior agency official Lois G. Lerner in which they described giving special attention to instances where “statements in the case file criticize how the country is being run.” Lerner, who oversees tax-exempt groups for the agency, raised objections and the agency revised its criteria a week later.

But six months later, the IRS applied a new political test to groups that applied for tax-exempt status as “social welfare” groups, the document says. On Jan. 15, 2012 the agency decided to target “political action type organizations involved in limiting/expanding Government, educating on the Constitution and Bill of Rights, social economic reform movement.,” according to the appendix in the IG report, which was requested by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee and has yet to be released.

It also seems that Jewish groups may have been included in those singled out for additional scrutiny by the IRS.  According to the Jewish Press,

. . . in 2010, the passionately pro-Israel organization Z STREET filed a lawsuit against the IRS, claiming it had been told by an IRS agent that because the organization was “connected to Israel,” its application for tax-exempt status would receive additional scrutiny.  This admission was made in response to a query about the lengthy reveiw (sic) of Z STREET’s tax exempt status application.

In addition, the IRS agent told a Z STREET representative that the applications of some of those Israel-related organizations have been assigned to “a special unit in the D.C. office to determine whether the organization’s activities contradict the Administration’s public policies.”

Yeah, I’d guess someone’s got some ‘splainin’ to do here.  And I kinda wonder who else might be on that “enemies list” at the IRS – and who gave it to them.

Oh, and that “bastion of conservative thought” Joe Klein seems kinda pissed about the IRS targeting conservative groups, too.  I wonder if he’s going to go totally bonzo when he sees these new revelations.

  • More “Sanity” from Public School Leadership

Seems as if a high school senior in Georgia decided to check up on his school’s Principal.  You know, to see if the individual had really been a “goody two-shoes” back in the day, and still was.  So this being 2013, he used the Internet.

Much to his delight, he found a mug shot of his Principal.  So, this being 2013 – he posted the mug shot photo on Instagram, along with some later comments.

Seems the Principal found and didn’t like that.  So the Principal called the young man into their office.

The Principal then told the young man that they “knew the law” and called police.  When Police arrived, the Principal asked the Police to arrest the young man.

Apparently the Police didn’t “know the law” like the Principal did.  They gave the Principal a “WTF?” look, refused to arrest anyone, and left.

The Principal nonetheless decided to suspend the student for “disrupting school” and being “belligerent”.  The suspension letter further said student was suspended for “spreading misinformation”.

(In fairness, when questioned about the photo, the student posted on Instagram that he thought the mug shot was from a DUI arrest.  However, his comment clearly stated that to be his opinion vice a documented fact.  It turns out the arrest resulting in the mug shot was actually for missing a court date for a speeding ticket.)

The student’s suspension was originally for 4 days, but later was reduced to 2 days.  It seems that “spreading misinformation” isn’t listed as a prohibited action in the school’s student handbook.

Looks like the Principal really “knows the rules”, too.

The Principal also reportedly threatened to suspend several other students for having a copy of the mug shot photo on their cell phones. I guess it must have been a “dirty” enough photo to qualify as pr0n.

No, I’m not kidding above.  This lunacy actually happened.

The incident occurred at Riverdale High School, in Riverdale, Georgia.  Per the linked article, the moron “esteemed and level-headed” Principal at that school appears to be a Ms. Jamille Miller Brown.

Frankly, it sounds more to me like Ms. Jamille Miller Brown is nothing more than a childish, petty tyrant and control freak who’s now butt-hurt.  I think her “widdle feewings” were hurt when her past record of misconduct was made known, and she’s now just desperately trying to limit the spread of information about same.  But I could be wrong.

IMO she’s also a freaking idiot who deserves and needs to be fired for terminally bad judgement and abuse of authority.  Then she could move to NYC, get a job in city government, and work for a like-minded control-freak.  But maybe that’s just me.

Riverdale High School seems to be part of the Clayton County School System.  The contact information for the Clayton County Board of Education seems to be available here.  According to their map, Riverdale seems to be in District 3.

Contact information for the Superintendent of Education for Clayton County can be found here.

Perhaps the Board of Education President and members would be interested in hearing what others think about this matter.  Ditto the Superintendent of Education.

  • Federal Fiscal Follies – The Disability Scam (an Update)

Thought I’d drop a quick update on another Federal program rife with fraud.  Yeah, yet another one of those Progressive “good ideas” that ended up paving the road to a famous but not-so-good destination.

According to the Social Security Administration, nearly 11 million Americans were receiving Social Security Disability payments in April. The precise total was 10,962,532 individuals.

For comparison, Greece’s last census put the population of Greece at 10,815,197.

You read that correctly.  Today, we’ve got more people drawing Social Security Disability in the USA than Greece has people.

The number works out to almost 3 ½% of the total US population on 30 April 2013.  And as I’ve written before, investigation indicates that about 1/4 of all Social Security Disability cases granted recently appear to have been granted improperly.

April also marked the 195th consecutive month that the number of persons receiving Social Security Disability payments increased.  That’s 16 years and 3 months of consecutive increase in the Social Security Disability lists.

It’s beginning to look like Social Security Disability is at risk of becoming just another free handout program.  Hell, for around 1/4 of those recently approved, that’s exactly what it appears to be.

    Wonderful. Just freaking wonderful.

    Oh that ain’t workin’
That’s the way you do it
    Get your money for nothin’ . . . .

  • Federal Fiscal Follies: Unemployment Compensation – A Follow-Up

I’ve written previously here about Unemployment Compensation (UC) here and here. Longtime TAH readers know I don’t think very highly of the UC program.  I’ve long held it’s rife with abuse.

I hate to say I told you so, but . . . a recent study confirms that last fact. The study estimates that in 2011 alone, there was an estimated $3.3 billion or more in outright fraud nationwide concerning UC.

The study was conducted for the St Louis Federal Reserve. It indicated that $108 billion was paid out nationwide in UC in 2011. Of that amount, approximately $3.3 billion – or about 3% – was found to have been paid out fraudulently.

Personally, I think that 3% number is almost certainly way low. I’m guessing the study’s authors were conservative and only used “slam dunk” cases of fraud in their study.  That almost certainly grossly underestimates the actual level.  I’d guess the actual percentage is easily 2 or 3 times that.

The details are sickening. One guy used UC to build a house. Another guy had friends in various HR departments covering for him, primed to say he was looking for work but “wasn’t a good fit” for any of their jobs when in fact the man was not looking for work at all.

And even better:  approx $2.2 billion in UC – or about 2/3 of the documented fraud total – was paid out to people who actually were working, but who “forgot” to report that fact.  Hell, we’ve seen one guy doing that honored here at TAH.

    Wonderful. Just freaking wonderful.

    Oh that aint workin
Thats the way you do it
    Get your money for nothin . . . .
