  • A Modern Thanksgiving Tradition – of Sorts

Because of the date of the original incident, this song has become a minor Thanksgiving tradition on many modern radio stations. This should also bring back a few memories for our Vietnam-era readers; hopefully, at this point, the passage of time has made them reasonably mellow ones. Enjoy.

For what it’s worth: the song actually is based – loosely – on a real event. Alice was a real person (Alice Brock); Alice had indeed purchased an old church (Trinity Church) and lived in same with her husband Ray as depicted in the song.

Arlo Guthrie and a friend, Richard Robbins, really were arrested for illegal littering in Stockbridge, MA, on Thanksgiving Day, 1965 – after they hauled off some of the Brocks’ garbage, found all local dumps closed, and illegally dumped the trash elsewhere. The arresting officer actually did look through the garbage to find a clue (the Brock’s address on an envelope), leading to Guthrie’s and Robbins’ arrest.

The judge that later heard the case actually was blind, and the arresting officer was named William J. “Obie” Obanhein – sometimes referred to as, yes, “Officer Obie”. (The judge’s use of a seeing-eye dog, the famous “twenty-seven 8 by 10 color glossy photos”, and much of the rest of the song’s purported dialog and/or events may well be satirical exaggeration on Guthrie’s part). They pleaded guilty to littering and creating a public nuisance and were indeed fined $25 each – or $50 total.

Guthrie was later called for the draft (some accounts say he tried to voluntarily enlist).  Whether his attempted entry into the military was voluntary or not, he was indeed disqualified for military service based on his criminal record (his guilty plea to the crimes of littering and creating a public nuisance and resulting in the payment of a $25 fine).

Though the song was at the time considered anti-war and adopted by the antiwar movement, Guthrie has long said the song was not written as an antiwar song. Rather, he says he wrote it more as an “anti-stupidity” song.

I have to say he has at least a partial point.  Disqualifying someone for military service because of a guilty plea to the crime of littering at a time of manpower demand so extreme it led to Project 100,000 (AKA MacNamara’s “Moron Corps”) does seem to fail the “WTF?” test.  Then again, all of us who’ve served already know that the Five-Sided Asylum often seems to regard common sense as a disqualifying trait for, well, pretty much anything.  (smile)

    Happy Thanksgiving, all. And remember:

You can get anything you want, at Alice’s Restaurant
    (Excepting Alice)
You can get anything you want, at Alice’s Restaurant
Walk right in it’s around the back
Just a half a mile from the railroad track
You can get anything you want, at Alice’s Restaurant

  • About Those “9,800” US Troops Staying in Afghanistan Next Year . . . .

Jonn wrote earlier today about US troops remaining in Afghanistan after the end of this year. Specifically, the word was we’re leaving “nearly 10,000” troops (9,800, specifically) there after the end of this year – 8,000 to support the NATO mission, with the rest dedicated to antiterrorism and/or other actions.

But it turns out that figure the POTUS and Pentagon keep throwing out there is a bit . . . . misleading. So I thought I’d help clarify.

The figure of 9,800 remaining in Afghanistan is consistent with what the POTUS claimed in May. Then, the claim was that we’d draw down below 10,000 troops by the end of this year; by another 50% (to less than 5,000) by the end of 2015; and to just those troops necessary for embassy security by the end of 2016.

And that would be all well and good. Except . . . I checked some recent news stories about the subject.

Guess what? My trouser leg is wet – yet again. And once again, it ain’t rain.

Seems as if some of our NATO allies have recently indicated there will be a delay in fulfilling their commitments to the Afghan mission. That delay will leave a gap in the short-term – in early 2015, to be precise.

Wanna guess who’s going to step in and fill that gap – to the tune of up to another 1,000 troops beyond those 9,800 originally planned? Naw, don’t bother to guess. Just read this link from Reuters carefully.

The Pentagon is calling this “a ‘bridging solution’ until other nations fulfil their pledges later in the year or the troops are no longer needed”. But don’t worry. While the Pentagon acknowledged holding discussions with NATO partners, spokesman RADM John Kirby stated, “As we stand here today, there is no change in the 9,800 force level.”

Look, we who’ve been in the military understand reacting to changes. And we understand that “the enemy has a vote”, and their actions can change our plans. The same is true of our allies.

But GMAFB, Admiral. We weren’t supposed to send combat troops to Vietnam either, – just a few “advisers”. You’d think the Pentagon would have learned from Vietnam that misleading the US public about how many troops we’re sending to a foreign war is a “seriously bad idea”. So how about you just tell us the truth about what’s going on here, OK?

Sheesh. This clueless DC clown krewe current Administration doesn’t appear to know its butt from a hole in the ground when it comes to national security and international relations. January 2017 can’t get here fast enough.

  • Well, There He Goes Again . . . .

Remember the POTUS Twitter account scandal? You know, where nearly 53% of the followers of the Twitter account belonging to the POTUS were determined to be something other than real people – e.g., artificial entities there for no other reason than to puff up the numbers and create an “echo chamber” to make it appear the account was more popular than it really was?

To borrow a famous phrase: “There he goes again”.

It seems there is an ObamaCare Facebook page. And, yeah – you guessed it. Just like the POTUS’s Twitter account, it’s also little more than an echo chamber driven by deception.

The ObamaCare Facebook page has somewhere around 227k comments since September 2012. Sounds good, right? Well, yeah, it does.

It does until you check into what’s actually going on a little more closely.  When you do that, you find that about 60% of those comments originated from a set of no more than 100 distinct Facebook profiles.

Yep: 100 Facebook profiles made about 136,000 of the roughly 237,000 comments on to the ObamaCare Facebook site.  That’s certainly a “broad cross-section” of public opinion, isn’t it?

But wait, it gets even better when you dig a bit deeper.  That’s the upper estimate for the number of actual people making those 136,000 comments. Multiple Facebook profiles appear to be in use. Indications are that many (if not most or all) human owning one of those 100 Facebook profiles has multiple Facebook profiles – 3 or 4 profiles seems to be common.

They’ve already found one such frequent commenter who admits to having 4 Facebook profiles in order to “make her voice heard better” (or words to that effect). I’m sure she’s not the only one – even Lone Ranger had Tonto, Silver, and Scout with him.

Another high-volume commenter isn’t even American; she’s from Canada.  Several seem to comment only during working hours – but not on weekends.  Hmm.

And since word got out that people were watching this, some formerly high-activity Facebook profiles commenting on the ObamaCare Facebook site have “magically” disappeared. So we may be talking about a small group of 25 and 40 actual people making 60% of those roughly 227,000 comments.

Oh, and that ObamaCare Facebook page?  It’s also done by Organizing for Action – the same folks that did the POTUS’s Twitter account.  Really makes you go, “Hmm” – doesn’t it?

The Washington Times has a decent article on this little issue. It’s a bit long, but it’s IMO well worth a read.

Yeah, your leg’s getting wet again. And I don’t think it’s rain this time, either.

  • About Those Terrorists Who “Didn’t” Sneak Across the Southwest Border . . .

Remember those allegations made by Rep. Duncan Hunter about terrorists coming across the US Southwestern border?  You know, those allegations that the current       group of less-than-truthful persons of irregular parentage running things in DC     Administration claimed – in the words of DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson – were “categorically false”?

Well, guess what?  It turns out those claims weren’t actually false at all.  Are you surprised the Administration “got it wrong” – again?  And apparently baldfaced lied about the matter?

Nah, me either.  I’ve already had to get rid of several pair of trousers because they keep p!ssing on my leg and telling me it’s rain.

While not members of ISIS, the 4 individuals in question were Turkish.  And

The men initially claimed to be members of the Revolutionary People’s Liberation Party/Front, known by the acronym DHKP/C. The group is a Marxist insurgency that claimed credit for a 2013 suicide bomb attack on the U.S. embassy in Ankara, Turkey’s capital, last year.

But U.S. counterterrorism officials said the men were more likely members of the PKK, or Kurdistan Workers’ Party, which has been battling for Kurdish rights within Turkey for decades, though recently PKK and Turkish leaders have tried to broker a political agreement.

Both the PKK and DHKP/C are listed by the State Department as terrorist groups.  Jessica Vaughan, policy studies director at the Center for Immigration Studies, said the fact that avowed members of terrorist groups got into the U.S. shows it’s possible to sneak across a porous border.

So, they’re not ISIS/ISIL terrorists – they’re simply other terrorists.  They only claimed to be members of a group of Marxists that have conducted suicide bomber attacks on a US Embassy, and which is recognized as a terrorist group by the State Department.

But they’re not ISIS/ISIL.  So I guess to this      group of clueless idiots      Administration that means, “No problem; it’s all good.”

The four men in question apparently paid a smuggler network $8,000 each to be smuggled into the US.  I’m guessing they weren’t the first to do that.  And I’m also guessing the lies we heard here about them not being terrorists aren’t the only lies we’re going to hear along those lines from this Administration, either.

The Washington Times had a fairly good article the other day on the subject; the quote above is from that article.  It’s worth reading.

  • Well, Maybe This Explains a Few Things

Ever wonder if there’s a military newspaper that’s published to serve the Pentagon and DC?  You know, like most Bases/Posts/Camps/Stations have an installation newspaper.

Yeah, one exists.  It’s called the “Pentagram”.

Seriously.  And it’s owned by the company that owns the Washington Post.

Yeah, the internal newspaper for the DoD HQ is named after a symbol today associated with the Occult.

You couldn’t make this sh!t up.

  • Remembrance of Elections Past

In “loving” memory of the Duke of Duval, Landslide Lyndon, Da Mayor and his Daley Machine, JFK/1960 – and with apologies to the late Warren Zevon:

    They Vote When They’re Dead

There’s plenty to do after they buy the farm
    They vote when they’re dead
Who says it’s wrong? This will protect our cause from harm
    They vote when they’re dead

The election judges all are bombed on gin
    They vote when they’re dead
    Election results, they’re twisted again
    They vote when they’re dead

Well, they “cast” their votes just as prescribed
    They vote when they’re dead
And if that don’t work, then somebody gets bribed
    They vote when they’re dead

I’ve got a .38 special up on the shelf
    They vote when they’re dead
If our side don’t win, maybe I’ll shoot myself
    They vote when they’re dead

There’s plenty to do after they buy the farm
    They vote when they’re dead
Who says it’s wrong? This will protect our cause from harm
    They vote when they’re dead

Remember that “progressive” mantra, everyone: Make sure you register to vote. Then vote early, vote often – vote forever!

    . . .

PS: Just in case you’re having trouble recognizing the tune – here’s the original.

  • From the State That Gave Us the “Bill & Hill Show” . . .

. . . we now have this headline:

    Democrat Running for Lt. Governor
of Arkansas Used to be a Stripper
    No, I’m not joking.

Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor in Arkansas John Burkhalter said being a male stripper in Little Rock was one of the many “tough jobs” he had in his past.

Yeah, it was years ago. And yeah, it’s an honest living – albeit one that raises eyebrows and is considered somewhat disreputable by many.

Still, an ex-stripper as a state’s Lt Governor? Kinda seems . . . well, just a bit “off”.

I knew Hope was not a strategy. I just didn’t realize it was a seedy bar in Arkansas with a rather raucous ladies’ night.  Then again:  considering the antics of the last President from Arkansas, I can’t say I’m exactly surprised, either.

You really couldn’t make this sh!t up if you tried.

  • Pentagon: some troops deployed to Africa “will have to handle infected blood samples”

Remember that       Administration feelgood exercise     military deployment to Africa to combat the Ebola outbreak? The one where the Administration first insisted that no troops would treat Ebola patients – even though uniformed USPHS Commissioned Corps personnel, who may be militarized by Presidential order, and who are also by law uniformed service personnel who qualify for VA benefits, PX/commissary privileges, and TRICARE, will be staffing one of the hospitals being built by US forces?

Well, other than that part about PHS Commissioned Corps, I guess that’s technically true. But as is often the case with this      DC clown krewe     Administration, it’s not the full story.  Here, that initial statement was misleading as hell – IMO by design.

It turns out that a number of uniformed military personnel deployed to West Africa will in fact be handling blood samples taken from Ebola patients in mobile testing labs.  A Pentagon spokesman, RADM John Kirby, has acknowledged that the risk involved is high, “if not more risk” than direct contact with Ebola patients.

DoD has already set up 3 such mobile testing labs in West Africa. Four more have been requested.

Of course, GEN David Rodriguez, US AFRICOM Commander, recently stated that containing the spread of Ebola “is a national security priority for President Obama”.  Presumably, that’s why we’re deploying forces to his AO.

    That statement is . . . interesting.

I say that, because we currently haven’t imposed any quarantine requirements for people entering this country who’ve been in the area of the outbreak within Ebola’s known incubation period – and who may be asymptomatic carriers for up to 21 days after exposure. And we still haven’t imposed a ban on nonessential travel to the area by US citizens and legal residents.

What’s it going to take for us to do that – someone bringing the virus here before they show symptoms? Oh, wait: that’s already happened in Dallas. I guess it will take substantially more than that to convince us to take this sh!t seriously.

So pardon me for not exactly taking that “national security priority” statement at face value. If containing Ebola were truly a “priority”, we’d be imposing substantially stricter entry controls on travelers from the outbreak region than we do today.
