  • An Exception to Every Rule.

    Once a Marine, always a Marine, or so the saying goes. Congressman Murtha is the exception to that rule. Marines have an awesome Esprit de Corps, they think there is nothing that they can’t do, just because they are Marines and you aren’t. They say “Gung Ho” and mean it, they are hard chargers.

    Jack Murtha, on the other hand is not, he isn’t a hard charger at all. Here he is AGAIN saying the US cannot win in Iraq militarily. “Look at all the people that have been displaced, all the [lost] oil production, unemployment, all those type of things,” said Rep. John P. Murtha, chairman of Appropriations defense subcommittee. “We can’t win militarily.” It is that old self-fulfilling prophecy thing again, no, you can’t win if you don’t try to, and it is clearly harder to win when the congressional “leaders” keep spouting off in the press that it is impossible for you to win.

    How is it, that in 2000 Al Gore and Company accused George W Bush of “Talking down the economy” and that was supposed to be some kind of horrific thing to do, but when Murtha and his congressional Dopes (er Doves) tell us the US military cannot win, that is not supposed to have any impact on the morale of the troops or the people of the US.

    The one thing Americans have always excelled at is exceeding the expectations of others. I am sure the court of King George III thought “They can’t beat us…” But, they did, and soundly. There were those who said man would never fly, but, the Wright brothers did that. Americans can do anything we set our minds to do, and no number of pantywaist ex-Marine congressmen will change that, no matter how much they try. But, he supports the troops! (Like a rubber crutch…)

  • Veteran victims; the Left’s latest absurdity

    This week, the week of Veterans’ Day, we’ve been pummelled with the media’s latest attack on the United States. CBS claims that the suicide rate among veterans is above the rate of Americans in general, disregarding that veterans are young and male and so their rate matches that of their peers. (Refuted here by Say Anything and Aviation Week) Is it a tragedy? Yes it most certainly is, but it’s not Bush’s fault – it’s not the VA’s fault. It’s more the fault of our culture (looking at you, CBS).

    Associated Press claims that soldiers are deserting at higher rates than ever before (well, since Vietnam). The New York Times reports that a quarter of homeless peple were veterans at some point in 2006;

    Recent surveys have painted an appalling picture. More than 300,000 of the nation’s 24 million veterans were homeless at some point during 2006, and while only a few hundred from Iraq or Afghanistan have turned up homeless so far, aid groups are bracing themselves for a tsunamilike upsurge in coming years.

    Sure aid groups are bracing – they have a financial interest in inflated numbers – in fact if you scroll down to the bottom of the NYT story, you’ll see where they had corrected their 300k from a 500k number because they were in such a rush to get the story out on Veterans Day they didn’t have time to check the methodology of their polls.

    While “only a few hundred from Iraq or Afghanistan have turned up homeless”, New York Times sees a great way to turn public opinion against Republicans – yet again.

    Now I’m not calling the NEw York Times liars, but I’ll tell you - quite a few “veterans” I’ve met couldn’t tell the difference between an M16 and SOS. DC is lousy with phony vets – I’ve busted several out in my travels around the city. And none of them pretend to be cooks or clerks – they’re all SEALs and Rangers. In fact, I’m in the process of busting out a guy who made the mistake of pretending to be in the 1st Battalion Rangers at the same time I was there back in the days of woolen longjohns.

    I watched some national news program back in 1992, during the presidential campaign where a correspondent was interviewing a supposed Gulf War veteran who was homeless. The correspondent asked the man when he had been in the Gulf and the man replied that he’d been there since “May”. Now either the guy was there three months before Hussein invaded Kuwait, or he was there two months after the war had ended. But the interviewer continued with the piece and didn’t bat an eye.

    I’ll never forget that I ran into a “homeless vet” in Syracuse near my office there. He was bumming money from me by telling me he was a veteran. I told him that I’m a veteran, too. His immediate response was “Why are you wearing that suit”? As if I didn’t fit the mold of a veteran because I had a job and wore a suit.

    I’ve been in touch with many of my troops since I left the Army and as far as I can tell, they’re all doing great. But the left and the media want to portray us as mental cases boiling under our peaceful facade. Honestly, I am boiling underneath my (reasonably) peaceful facade – at the Left.

    Dean Barnett at The Weekly Standard, in his piece (dated 11-26) The Last Talking Point of the Left; the vet-as-victim, told of an email exchange he had with National Guard colonel;

    I recently exchanged emails with a colonel in the California National Guard–an attorney when not on active duty–about Bruce Spring-steen’s new song “Gypsy Biker.” The song portrays Iraq war veterans as gullible dupes who shed their blood while “the speculators made their money,” and the colonel wrote;

    It’s this portrayal of vets as burnt-out losers with nowhere to go but out on the open road that gets me. I was in court today, a vet, arguing a million-dollar case, in front of a judge who was also a vet. Vets aren’t burned out losers–we’re leaders. For every vet with problems–and they certainly exist, though I would guess in percentages far below that of the comparable civilian population–there are dozens of vets out there building businesses, raising families, and leading communities. Many give up weekends and vacations to stay in the Guard and Reserve. But I guess those guys aren’t cool enough or useful enough.

    The stereotypical vet is the burned-out homeless guy with a torn old green field jacket. I say it should be the dad dropping his little girl off at preschool before he goes to the business he built from nothing while fielding phone calls from his Guard unit’s full-time staff and driving a car with a trunk full of military gear so that, when the next earthquake or riot hits, he can go out and protect his community–again.

    But the Left makes it’s points with the public by making the norm less normal – and veterans always get the shitty end of the stick.

  • Wreath laying at Arlington’s Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers

    Today at the 11th Hour of the 11th Day of the 11th Month, Vice President Cheney laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers. We got there a little late, so a good samaritan took this video for me (YouTube link) from his more advantageous spot. If you’ve never been to a wreath-laying at Arlington, this is a better perspective than you get from the 10-second clips you get from the media on the nightly news. I cut down the 30-minute video to 9 minutes for YouTube upload.

    The reason we were late; I stopped by to see some old friends and I stopped at some regimental memorials like this one from my affiliated regiment the 325th Airborne Infantry of the 82d Airborne Division;

    I also took some photos after the crowd thinned out some while Mr. Cheney went in to attend the concert in the amphitheater.

    Notice the HUGE media coverage of the event – the premier Veterans’ Day event;

    There were actually two cameras during the ceremony – every other year I’ve come, the scaffolding was packed with cameramen – even the other year I came and VP Cheney did the ceremony in 2001. Love that media of ours.

    I had heard there was going to be trouble at the event and I saw some unsavory people on the subway train that got off there and that were hanging around after the ceremony outside of the Cemetary – like they were waiting for someone – but seein’s how it was pretty early in the morning, I doubt the other derelicts could bring themselves to get out of bed.

  • Happy 232d Birthday Marines

    On November 10th, 1775 the United States Marine Corps was formed. From fighting the Barbary Pirates, to Belleau Wood, from Guadalcanal, Tarawa, and Iwo Jima, from the Chosin to Saigon, from Beirut to Grenada, from Panama to Kuwait, from Khandahar to Baghdad, everywhere Americans have fought the Marines have been there, steadfast and true. Semper Fidelis indeed.
    Eagle Globe and AnchorIf the Army and the Navy
    Ever look on Heaven’s scenes,
    They will find the streets are guarded
    By United States Marines.

    Nothing else quite so captures the attitude of the Marines as well as that verse

  • Another Day, Another Genuine Hero Ignored by The Media

    1LT Walter B. Jackson, became, last Friday only the seventh soldier in the past 32 years to be awarded the Distinguished Service Cross.

    Lt. Jackson’s citation in part reads:

    “Upon regaining consciousness after being shot, second lieutenant alternated between returning fire and administering first aid to the Soldier. Second Lt. Jackson was hit again with machine gun fire as he helped carry his wounded comrade to safety, but he never faltered in his aid. Although his own severe wounds required immediate evacuation and surgical care, 2nd Lt. Jackson refused medical assistance until his wounded comrade could be treated. Second Lt. Jackson’s selfless courage under extreme enemy fire was essential to saving another Soldier’s life and is in keeping with the finest traditions of military service…”

    Despite how much the MSM claims to support the troops, they are AGAIN scooped by the bloggers.

    Lieutenant Jackson has all my respect and admiration.

  • Lieberman: Democrats Beholden to Hyper-partisan Paranoid Base

    The Financial Times
    Joe Lieberman finally slams the kook base. No, he isn’t telling us anything we don’t know, but, it is refreshing to see someone who was (and really is ) a prominent democrat Speak Truth To Kooks. The 2008 Democratic candidates are beholden to a “hyper-partisan, politically paranoid” liberal base that could endanger the final nominee’s chances of winning next year’s presidential election, Joe Lieberman, the former vice-presidential Democratic candidate, said yesterday He went on to note:“[Today’s Democrats] are inclined to see international problems as a result of America’s engagement with the world and are viscerally opposed to the use of force – the polar opposite to the self-confident and idealistic nationalism of the party I grew up in.” While it is nice to see some honesty from a democrat, don’t expect this to become widespread too soon. The kook fringe donates enough money that the DNC will cater to them for the foreseeable future.

  • Terry Stater Column

    Terry Stater has written an outstanding column entitled: The Second Casualty of War, you can find it HERE on STLToday.com
    A short excerpt: If “In war, truth is the first casualty,” the second is the image and reputation of our military. It has been under attack for 40 years. It isn’t the primary target; it is collateral damage, or a useful secondary target, in a war on the war.

    Debate on the Iraq war is legitimate. Dissent can be patriotic. But the campaign against the honor, courage and integrity of our troops isn’t just unpatriotic; it is despicable. It is treason. The honor of those who serve cannot be tarnished or stolen. It is diminished only in those who try. Those who denigrate our military often begin with, “I support the troops, but….”
    Very worthwhile reading.
