  • Welcome Home in Sioux Falls

    sioux-falls

    Rurik sent me the above picture with the following email;

    I am the mother of one of the 4 Guardsmen who came home on leave yesterday. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for the welcome home you provided. My son was in total shock as he got on the escalator and asked “what’s going on down there?” To have the “Welcome to Sioux Falls” sign surrounded by the flags was perfect — what a sight! I’m glad I took pictures before their arrival as I had too many tears in my eyes as it was happening.

    Your presence as they left for Ft Hood in April was wonderful, But, for you people to take your time, especially on a holiday, to honor these guys as they arrive home on leave is awesome. As a parent of 2 that are deployed over there right now it’s heartwarming to know that they haven’t been forgotten.

    This part of the email came from the Patriot Guard Riders that told the story of the events before the troops arrived;

    After putting out this “Welcome Home” mission for 9:00 p.m. on Labor Day and then having to cancel it, just hours before the Soldiers arrived, because they were able to get an earlier flight, we did some scrambling. Even with the “Ultra-short notice” mission change, we mustered ten flag bearers to welcome these four Heroes from Charley Battery, 147th FA. Home for a couple of well desired weeks of R&R.

    There were a number of people seated around us in the airport and some asked why we where there. Of course we told them, and when the four Soldiers came down the escalator, everyone around us started applauding and shouting “Welcome Home”. It’s very heartwarming to know that the local people are backing you up.

    I don’t know what I could add.

  • DU and vets with guns

    jesse-kelly

    There’s a candidate for Congress out there named Jesse Kelly who is getting some minor press at World Net Daily and who gives the clowns at Democratic Underground the willies.

    Now, a U.S. Marine who helped lead the initial charge into Iraq to oust Saddam Hussein is taking that approach literally by brandishing his M-16 assault rifle in some eye-catching campaign fundraising ads.

    “I’m taking full credit for that,” says 28-year-old Jesse Kelly of Tucson, Ariz., a Republican seeking to boot Democrat Gabrielle Giffords from the U.S. House of Representatives.

    Regarding his “tough guy” theme, Kelly said, “People are sick of politicians from all parties. They’re lying to them. People want someone to fight for them in Washington and that’s the message I want to convey.”

    After being honorably discharged in 2004 and taken off inactive reserve last year, Kelly now works in the private sector as a project manager for a construction company that handles commercial water and sewer projects.

    Well, that’s more than the weinies at DU can stand. It takes them just a few posts to start calling names;

    Kerrytravelers
    3. He is no longer active duty nor still in the reserves. He just like to play dress-up in his old soldier uniforms and pretend to be a tough guy. He’s a total fool.

    I guess that the guy called Kerrytravellers forgets that his candidate in the 2004 election ran the homevideo of the gangly fella totin’ his rifle in full battle regalia around the jungles of Vietnam. And he forgets the awkward salute when Kerry “reported for duty”. But someone asks the question if Kerry didn’t use the vid in his campaign. The response;

    21. I don’t remember specifically either.

    I do remember his service record in Vietnam came up but I don’t recall if he brought it up as a part of his campaign or if he addressed it due to the swift boat challenges. I definately remember that he had several pictures and such of him duck hunting (shotguns, etc.) as a way to win the pro gun votes.

    Can you imagine living through the Kerry campaign in 2004…or any other year…and not being able to recall if his veteran status was ever mentioned? I thought his real name was John Kerry Who Served In Vietnam because I never saw his name without the Vietnam reference for more than a year.

    Someone posted the video and photographic proof. The ridiculous response;

    MTERAN9
    30. Interesting I’ve never seen those. Was that part of his campaign?

    He must’ve been in a cave in Tora Bora.

    cascadiance
    45. We should note that anyone can be a nut. Take McVeigh as an example…He was also a vet and was a nut. Now one should be careful not to criticize him in ways that could backfire with those of the public that do like nationalistic symbolism and view critiques done improperly as being “unAmerican”. But I think there’s a way to be careful and still critique guys like this to make sure everyone sees the holes in his logic, without just attacking his nationalistic symbolism.

    “He was also a vet and a nut…” Aren’t we all?

    The_Casual_Observer
    41. That guy is talking like McVeigh

    One rational member asks what the problem is with the campaign, the response;

    20. Here’s an answer for you; If you think showing up with an M-16 in conservative advertising isn’t threatening, you are ignorant. Do you support threatening politicians with big guns?

    Um, where’s the threat – unless you include the fact that he could beat a Democrat in an election.

    But this has to be the money shot;

    Gregorian
    44. Now that I’m seeing this kind of stuff, I have to say that after 8 incredible years of Bush, I’m rather proud of Democrats for how they’ve handled themselves. I mean, that administration was so retched, and so hypocritical, I cannot believe how well we behaved. Talk about mature and intelligent.

    And so now that the nightmare is over, these dingbats come out of the woodwork…for what? What on earth are they irate about? Health care? Responsible foreign policy? Concern for the environment? All I can do is just wonder what some humans are all about.

    Yeah, I remember how well they behaved, too.

    Thanks to Claymore for the link.

  • Barbecuein’ and cigar smoking at WRAMC

    velos-b-day-038a

    Concretebob and Gunn Nutt put together a great barbeque for the troops at Walter Reed Army Medical Center yesterday. I was lucky enough to get an invitation – but I was so lazy, that my designated driver took the pictures for me.

    There was a live band and tons of chow. Thanks for inviting us, guys – it was an honor in more ways than one.

  • Scott’s office vandalized

    I linked to this video Sunday wherein Congressman David Scott melted down because he didn’t believe there were any white doctors in his district;

    The local news reports this morning that someone spray painted a swastika on a sign in front of his office;

    Employees discovered a Swastika allegedly spray-painted on a sign by vandals at Rep. Scott’s office in Smyrna.

    The motivation of the vandals is still under investigation.

    He claims there’s some hate mail involved, too;

    Scott held up a sheet of paper to Watson that had a picture of President Obama on it, his face made to look like the joker in Batman, a swastika on his forehead. Then he read what it said.

    “They address it to n—– David Scott, ‘You were, you are, and you shall forever be, a n—–‘,” Scott said, reading from the letter. “I got this in the mail today. Somewhere underneath this, bubbling up, is the ugly viscissitudes of racism.

    Yeah, so we’re all racists because ONE racist sent him some mail and possible ONE OTHER person painted a swastika on his sign. That’s the simple answer.

    David Scott was on Fox News this morning. He claims that the video from channel 11 was re-edited somehow. “Judge me right”. Since the video wasn’t a news camera, it isn’t true;Because the news isn’t coming from the media, somehow we can’t trust our lyin’ eyes.

    Photo of the sign below the fold thanks to CRaisi;

  • Stolen flag returned to WWII vet

    I guess this is one of those things that only happens in Middle America; from the Billings Gazette;

    A U.S. Marine Corps flag stolen from an 83-year-old veteran who fought his way across numerous islands in the South Pacific during World War II was returned Saturday morning.

    The flag taken from Bob McGray’s front yard last week showed up in a bag hanging from his mailbox with an anonymous note apologizing for the theft and expressing gratitude for McGray’s service to his country.

    “I can’t tell you how happy I am,” McGray said. “I’d like to meet the guy who brought it back. I have no animosity toward him.”

    “We cannot emphasize enough the gratitude that we feel for the service that you have performed for our country,” the unsigned note said. “I personally made sure that your flag has not touched the ground.”

  • This really torqued me off

    Last night I got some emails about the Monster.com advertisement for Internment / Resettlement Specialists for the National Guard. The emailers were pushing the image of Americans being rounded up for their political ideology. Here’s the ad complete with a video and an exerpt;

    Some of your duties as an Internment / Resettlement Specialist may include:

    * Assisting with supervision and management of confinement and detention operations
    * Providing internal or external security to confinement/corrections facilities or detention/internment facilities
    * Providing custody, control, supervision and escort to all security levels of U.S. military prisoners or internees/detainees
    * Counseling and guidance to individual prisoners within a rehabilitative program
    * Preparing or reviewing reports and records of prisoners/internees and programs

    Ed Morrissey did a pretty good job of laying the whole conspiracy thing to rest. But there are some points I’d like to add.

    Do you honestly believe that kid who grew up next door to you, played with your kids, learned to ride his bike in your driveway and then joined the National Guard after high school would really stand by and watch as you got tossed in prison for your ideology? Are you folks starting to be like the Left and beginning to believe that our soldiers are raised in special camps like the Spartans and then just do the bidding of the President – whoever he is?

    We weren’t afraid of our troops during the Bush Adsministration, so why, suddenly, can’t we trust them now? The day after the election, I wrote that we needed to continue to support the troops, because I knew some folks would need a reminder.

    Those folks in uniform are thinking, rational human beings. To even suspect that they’d allow themselves to used to round up and intern Americans in prison camps is just goofy fucking bullshit. And it’s the kind of goofy bullshit I heard from the Left for eight years.

  • Kansas WWII vets visit DC

    The Washington Post has a great story this morning about a community in Kansas that made it possible for some of their aging veterans to see the memorials in DC that were erected to honor their service;

    …13 of Brown County’s 22 surviving veterans who were able to make the trip. Some walked, and others had to be wheeled to the Iwo Jima Memorial in Arlington County on Tuesday night. All received applause from tourists and salutes from Marines.

    “I had goose bumps on my arms and tears in my eyes,” said Forrest Jones of Sabetha, Kan., who served in the Marines and Army and fought in World War II and the Korean War. He wore a hat that said “Served with Pride,” but he was humble when tourists approached him and shook his hand to thank him for his service.

    “I didn’t do anything,” said Jones, 86. “I was just being a good citizen and trying to save our country.”

  • Marines’ ban on social networking

    My email inbox has been filling up with messages from those of you who are outraged that the Marine Corps has apparently banned their troops from using Facebook and Twitter and other social networking. Well, the only reason I haven’t mentioned it is because McQ did such a great job of explaining it all yesterday at Blackfive.

    To summarize, they’re just enforcing restrictions that were already in place and it seems the ban is only to affect the USMC’s network – like many employers do to conduct business.

    But “good lookin’ out” to all of you who emailed.
