  • The real meaning of Veterans Day.

    In a matter of hours it will be Veterans Day. Festive grilling and parades will be the order of the day. But what is also on the schedule is the is the use of pandering veterans for political purposes, 4 day sales at 20% percent off and a day for dress up for the pretend heroes. All of these things have really have a impact on how Veterans Day is viewed as just another holiday. Veterans day should be a day were those who have served honorably should be recognized rather then just the one that we agree with politically. That it should be a day to dismantle every stereotype about Veterans that have endured various hardships, but also endured to live a happy and productive life after the guns go silent. To understand that a receptive ear with a helping hand have a more enduring effect then a free blooming onion. We are one of the few professions that has can provide such a strong and enduring connection with complete strangers. Also the task of making sure that the stories of those who have served before us are preserved for those yet to come. Also to protect them from those that would steal them for their own.

    The reason that I started with this post was after watching a video posted by Rethink Afghanistan. In the video it calls to honor the Veterans that oppose the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq on Veterans Day. I was insulted not because of the fact that they oppose the Wars, but in the sense that it was all but saying that we should only honor those Veterans with their point of view excluding many that have not be vocal about their views or have been on the opposite side of the fence. Veterans day should not be about scoring political points for your gain , but a overall reflection and respect to those that have served with honor and distinction, regardless their views. It is about the small token of respect that is offered to those who have come before, with and after us. Also in the respect that despite how may people would like to see us as shown by popular media or political organizations. That how highlight how we have lived our lives in and out of the Military in contrast to the unstable loner. Because if we are not willing to do this now then how can we expect others to do this for us in our Golden years?

    It should also be a day of family in that when we are deployed that may of us become close because of the hardships, separations and dangers. But that often disappears when we return home, a place were it could be said is needed the most. While family may want to help, it is the basic things like understood terms that help a difficult conversations to happen without having many intermissions to explain military jargon. If the military is to be considered a family then perhaps Veterans day should be looked more as a family reunion. To remember old times and learn of some new ones. We are certainly a dysfunctional family , but I think that is what keeps us coming back for more.

    Lastly is to use it to remember the past. That we must be open to new types of media and communications of the newer generations. In one of the past Veterans Day,before I joined the military I took part in a WW2 them table top tournament at a Army Museum in Austin. While we were there we got a chance to talk to those that served in previous wars. One of the stories was about several Shermans going down a hill and the fuel tank breaking open and flooding the the crew compartment. Also it was a lively exchange of stories from retired military , educators, and other history buffs alike. It is preservation of the character of these people that should remember in hopes that the next generation will emulate it.

    But lastly is the protection of the character from those that wish to steal it. Normally a medal is viewed a strand of fabric with a shiny signet. That it can infuse the wearer with respect and purpose just by wearing it, the more medals the larger the respect would be come. But it it not the undeserved praise that is greatest insult but in that many a times these medals come at cost, some more then others. The cost can be time, hardships, pain and longer natural life. If it were possible for these medals to allow these pretenders to relive what many had to do to earn these medals, then perhaps there would be less of a desire wear them.. But that will never happen, so it is up to us to keep a good look out and find these people. Because it is a crime not because of the honor taken from real honest to God Veterans, but because they are unwilling to endure the hardships to wear that strip of colored cloth.

    All in I hoped I would not get too wordy in this, though I believe I failed in that. I wanted to say with a detailed answer of what it means to observe Veterans Day and what we can do to make it have real meaning rather then just another four day weekend on the calendar.

  • Last hours of the VALOUR-IT inter-service competition

    If you’ve been waiting for the last minute to give to the VALOUR-IT basket, this is it, the last minute, I mean.

    Yeah, I know the Marines are still ahead, but not out of reach. A couple of you could catch us up just by giving your weekly beer change. So give.

  • VALOUR-IT update

    Yeah, so those grungy-assed Marines are leading in the competition between the services to get voice-activated laptops to our wounded troops, but that’s only because most Army guys are paying for at least one ex-wife;

    The competition ends on Veterans’ Day, so there’s still time to help the Army team out. Do like you did when you were on active duty-go downtown and pawn your TA-50. Let your ex- slide for one month on her alimony check. Ripoff five gallons of Mogas from the motor pool and send in the money you saved. You were all privates, so you know how to squeeze out a couple of bucks from your paychecks.

    Click on the link in our sidebar and give as generously as you can for a great cause and join a great team of donors.

  • Valour-IT time again

    I’m a little late to the party, but it’s Valour-IT competition time again. If you’re not familiar with Valour-IT, I’ll let Blackfive explain;

    WHAT IS VALOUR-IT?

  • Pin-Ups For Vets And Cooking With The Troops Partner For Operation Fight Post Holiday Blues

    Snagged and tagged from Laughing Wolf at Blackfive. I know you guys never stop thinking about the troops, but the holidays are coming up – most of you remember the holidays with the big green or blue machines;

    The post-holiday blues can be bad enough on those who are healthy, and fully engaged in their normal activities. Stop for a moment and consider what it might be like for a member of the U.S. or Allied forces who find themselves evacuated to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany. The time between Thanksgiving and New Year’s has been like a fire-hose of attention, visits, and more. Then, suddenly, it’s gone. They are alone in a hospital, in a foreign country, and away from friends, family, and normal support networks. Despite the dedicated efforts of staff and volunteers, the blues can hit hard.

    Recognizing that, Gina Elise of the non-profit Pin-Ups for Vets (pinupsforvets.com) and Cooking with the Troops (cwtt.org) have partnered to create Operation Fight Post Holiday Blues. This special event, timed for mid-January to have maximum effect, will combine a special dinner for a planned 150 people cooked by Guest Chef Ellen Adams (redhotdish.com), with hospital and other visits by Gina to help drive the blues away. To aid this effort, the team is being joined by author Michael Z. Williamson (michaelzwilliamson.com), who will also do visits, autographs, and give away books.

    Full details on the event can be found at http://cwtt.org/opfphblues.html and all participants are available for interviews. To do this event, Pin-Ups for Vets and Cooking with the Troops are looking to raise $15,000. Donations can be made by mail, or online at http://cwtt.org/donations.html via PayPal. Donors can note on the donation that it is for Operation Fight Post-Holiday Blues. Any funds raised that are not used will be used to support future operations at Pin-Ups for Vets and Cooking with the Troops.

  • Spc. Ryan Longnecker: A two year mystery.

    I came across this story a few minutes ago. The short version is that a National Guard Soldier goes missing and reported AWOL. A few months later post personal at Camp Shelby found the remains are what to be believed to be the missing Solider. Two years later, the authorities are still not sure what caused the death of Spc. Ryan Longnecker.

    It started out that a a National Guard Solider missed movement for a deployment in 2007. That by itself would not be unheard of but then it gets interesting. It seems that when he went missing he had a M4 Assault Rifle and a M9 handgun. Both that remained missing until the remains were found along with the weapons.

    His family was told that he had run away to avoid deployment and that he was on the run. His body was found in the motorpool still wearing his uniform with both weapons. Everything seemed to be hush hush about it outside of the base.

    Also how this is being handled as far as not giving any information in regards to what happened to Spc. Ryan Longnecker, how he went missing, and why after two years no one really knows what happened. If this is kept fresh perhaps we might have a chance to find out what happened.

    I will never leave a fallen comrade.

  • Westboro meets Free Republic’s DC Chapter at Arlington

    The Free Republic’s DC Chapter is the most stalwart and persistent group on the planet. Aside from all of the other events they protest and counter-protest, they stand watch at the main gate of Walter Reed every Friday night – every Friday for the last six years (I think) through all kinds of weather.

    The day before their appearance at the Supreme Court yesterday Fred Phelp’s Westboro “Baptist” Church showed up at Arlington and TroopRally and his crowd were there.

    I recognize my old friends from the days in DC.

    These photos were all taken by our friend, Smorgasbord, who was kind enough to not only make the trek to Arlington from Philadelphia and stand with the Free Republic DC Chapter for us, but he sent us these pictures as well. That’s him with the PVC Pipe Sign on his head. Thanks, buddy. I guess Smorg was rewarded by bumping (figuratively speaking) into actor Danny Devito on his way home.

    I’ve loaded all of Smorgasbord’s pictures to my Flickr Photostream if you want to see them all.

  • Soldiers’ Angels burglar caught

    ROS sends us good news that the slow, dull-witted pea-brained burglar who looted Soldiers’ Angels a week ago has been caught;

    “Certificates, awards, letters, inspirational letters,” says the group’s co-founder, Jeff Bader. “All of these were in the display modules and it feels like the loss of a loved one. Feels like we were violated.”

    The thief also vandalized the charity’s exhibit room with flame retardant foam, right by the Fallen Heroes memorial.

    “It was totally disrespectful,” adds Bader. “It’s unimaginable that someone would come into a place, a non-profit, and steal from a non-profit trying to help American soldiers.”

    Surveillance video from businesses next door led police to the arrest of 42 year old Charles Edward White. White is now charged with burglary of a building, but News 4 WOAI found this isn’t his first time behind bars.

    White has been in and out of jail since the late eighties for assault, kidnapping, drugs, and burglary.

    Well, from what I’ve heard, in Texas that’s enough to execute the weasel three or four times. I think he needs to be waterboarded a few times (by a few times, I mean a lot) until he tells us why he vandalized what he wouldn’t steal.

    The article says that police haven’t located any of the stuff that was stolen and Soldiers’ Angels will probably have to replace it from funds that might otherwise go to the great work they do for the troops.

    Since they’ve paid for my beer a few times, I owe it to them to help them replace their money. If you want to give them money, here’s the link to their donate page – but there are other ways to help them out.
