  • Brandon Blackstone; fake wounded warrior

    Stars & Stripes writes about Brandon Blackstone who pleaded guilty to lying about his time in Iraq in order to profit from his non-existent injuries. He appropriated the story of fellow Texan Corporal Casey Owens, a real wounded Marine. Owens was evacuated from Iraq when his Humvee struck an anti-tank mine. Blackstone was evacuated when he had a case of appendicitis.

    Owens committed suicide on October 16, 2014 and Blackstone appropriated his story for himself;

    Owens’ Marine buddies say they believe Blackstone took key details of Owens’ combat injury and made them his own so he could bilk the government and charities out of hundreds of thousands of dollars.

    “He’s living off a fake story. It’s disgusting,” said Nick Sowers, 38, Owens’ best friend in Iraq who also was wounded in action.

    In his guilty plea, Blackstone, 35, admits that he lied about earning a Purple Heart in Iraq to qualify for a mortgage-free house in Fort Worth from a wounded warrior charity. He also received monthly disability checks from the Department of Veterans Affairs for about nine years, officials said. Blackstone did so by forging two witness statements from Marines who he falsely claimed witnessed his war injury, federal court records show.

    Federal officials have not yet publicly said how much money Blackstone stole from the government and charities. He faces up to 21 years in federal prison when he’s sentenced in February for wire fraud and fraudulent representation about the receipt of a military decoration for financial gain.

    You should read the whole story at S&S – it’s a pretty long article. But remember that Stolen Valor is a victim-less crime.

  • Richard Reisz; phony veteran

    Richard Reisz; phony veteran

    Richard Reisz

    WFIE in Indiana writes about Richard Reisz, one of their locals who operated a gym, Ground Zero Fitness, in Evansville. Reisz had veterans license plates on his car which made some of the folks there curious. I guess he had been busted last year by our friends at Guardian of Valor and Green Beret Poser Patrol, but the folks at GBPP tell me that they let him plead out – he promised that he’d never pose again and make a donation to the Special Forces Association if they’d let him off the hook.

    As far as the license plates go, it looks like Indiana DMV has a problem of their own;

    In order to obtain those types of plates, you’re supposed to supply paperwork proving you’re a veteran.

    When we questioned the supervisor of the vehicle department at the Henderson County Clerk’s Office, the supervisor discovered the problem.

    The certificate of registration for that vehicle shows a veteran issued plate but the correct forms to prove military service weren’t in the file.

    The vehicle is registered to two people.

    A woman and another person described as the “owner of Ground Zero Fitness”.

    After we alerted the supervisor to this problem, the supervisor called the number associated with the plate and requested it be brought back.

    That person immediately brought the plate back.

    According to the supervisor, the owner said he would bring the correct military record forms into the office, but he never has.

    Reisz has been arrested for pulling over people on the highway dressed in an Army combat uniform claiming to be an Army Sergeant Major (the last person I would pull off the road for). He’s also been arrested for posing as a state trooper in Kentucky. He’s also been arrested for possessing forged documents and also for conspiracy to commit bank fraud and theft by deception. So, I’m not sure why our partners would want to believe him when he says that he’d promise to quit pretending to be in the military.

    Anyway, he called the folks at GBPP a few days ago to get another pass. That one didn’t work.

    Richard Reisz1

    So, you phonies out there begging me to remove the post about you, this is why I won’t. Live with it.

    James Gregory Fincher; phony hero

    James Gregory Fincher (4)

    Someone sent us their work on this James Gregory Fincher fellow who had these photos of his wedding posted to his Facebook page until recently. Someone must’ve warned him we were coming;

    James Gregory Fincher (1)

    James Gregory Fincher (3)

    As you can see in the photos, he claims a second award of a Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Senior Master Jump Wings, Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star Medal, Bronze Star Medal 2 awards, and a Purple Heart. Each one qualifies him for prosecution under the provisions of the Stolen Valor Act. We’re told that he also claims to be a retired First Sergeant.

    Well, according to the National Personnel Records Center, none of that is true. He was a Petroleum Supply Specialist in the National Guard and he deployed during Desert Storm. No valor awards, no jump wings, no time in the infantry. He did eight years in the National Guard and left as a specialist (E-4);

  • J Thomas Burch to retire from VA

    J Thomas Burch to retire from VA

    J THOMAS BURCH - PHOTO - 4a

    Back in the Spring, we wrote about J Thomas Burch and his phony Special Forces career after CNN exposed his charity, the National Vietnam Veterans Foundation as the worst performing veterans’ charity. It took in $29 million in donations paying out only a few thousand to actual veterans’ causes, spending most of it on professional fund raising.

    Well, CNN reports that the VAOIG started looking into Burch (he’s also a lawyer with the VA);

    [New York Attorney General Eric] Schneiderman has accused Burch of using donated funds to spend lavishly on travel, a yearly salary and other personal benefits, including a severance package the charity awarded him when he stepped down after being exposed by CNN.

    Burch’s spending also included payments to women, as well as hotel and nightclubs.

    The VA was unaware of Burch’s involvement with the National Vietnam Veterans Foundation until a CNN investigation exposed the VA employee in May. The Department of Veteran Affairs Inspector General launched its own investigation, and last week the Department of Veterans Affairs announced it “immediately initiated the process for Mr. Burch’s removal from federal service.”

    Yeah, they’re removing him by forcing him to retire, so he’ll still get thousands of dollars in pension money, big punishment. Big Whoop!

    Thanks to David for the link.

    Someone sent us this fellow, Matthew Corcoran who likes to tell folks how he was “Special Forces Navy Sniper in the Middle East and South America”. On Facebook, he says that his job was “population reduction specialist at the US Navy” – ha-ha-ha, big joke.

    Don Shipley says there’s no record of Matthew training as a SEAL.

    The Navy disagrees with Corcoran’s version of his career;

    I know it’s a little hard to read, but the DD214 says that he had eight months in the Navy before they decided that he wasn’t worth the trouble and put him back on the street. I’m pretty sure the Navy’s idea of infantry is a little different from mine.
