  • Just When You Think You Have Liberals Pegged . . .

Sometimes you see something that makes you go, “Huh?” Not because it’s BS – but because it surprises you.

I certainly did recently. That happened when I read this article, where rapper/actor Ice-T comes out strongly in favor of individual gun ownership and the individual right for concealed carry.

Ice-T has an, um, “checkered” past, and he certainly made no bones about his political leanings 4 years ago.  However, he’s also proof that at least a few liberals “get it” when it comes to gun ownership, the Second Amendment, and Constitutional rights.  He also proves that not all liberals toe the “party line” on all issues.

I can’t exactly say I agree with Ice-T across the board here – I’d not have singled out the police as targets like he did in the article (IMO the right of firearms possession and carry is better justified as allowing defense of person in particular and liberty in general). But the article and accompanying video are certainly at least minor bits of sanity from the liberal side of the house regarding firearms ownership.  I guess even stopped clocks are right twice a day.

I can’t wait to see what our resident liberals have to say about this.  (smile)

  • Firearms Inexperience May Have Saved Lives

It’s being reported in the mainstream media that the casualty count in the Aurora shooting could have been much higher but for the fact that the shooter’s semi-auto rifle jammed. The Washington Post says authorities found a 100 round capacity drum magazine in the theater. While it doesn’t say whether the magazine was empty or how many unexpended rounds it contained, if it was not empty, it could well explain the malfunctioning of the rifle.

Most of those familiar with military firearms know that drum magazines, while capable of providing a large ammunition capacity, have a long history of being prone to jamming more frequently than the more commonly used 20 or 30 round, straight-feed, box magazines. In fact, one of the main complaints about one of the most widely used weapons of WWII, the Russian PPSh-41 submachine gun, was the frequency with which its 71 round, drum magazine jammed during firefights. American troops had similar complaints about the less widely used Thompson submachine gun when equipped with a drum magazine.
It is likely that the Aurora shooter was unfamiliar with this reality and was seeking maximum shooting capacity without having to reload, thus his selection of the 100 round, drum magazine. Fortunately for theater patrons who escaped being shot, the drum likely performed in accordance with its design’s reputation for unreliability.

This magazine issue might have some legal bearing on the prosecution of the case if it can be shown he bought the drum magazine separate from the weapon, which could be construed to indicate he took additional, deliberate steps to achieve

  • We Don’t Need no Stinking Guns…

We are told by liberals that we have no need for personal weapons because the police will protect us from violent criminals. We all know, without citing the endless litany, that the reality is that the police are most likely to arrive long after the perpetrators have fled, the police officers’ primary usefulness being to summon the ambulances and interview the still-living victims. Look at this most recent example of public violence claiming multiple lives in Colorado. The police chief is on air proudly proclaiming that his officers were on site within one minute. Well, that’s well and good except for what transpired prior to that minute.

His officers weren’t there to shoot down this assassin the moment he opened fire on this collective group of victims, who were innocently and conveniently awaiting their victimhood.

His officers weren’t there until the killer had completed his murderous slaughter and exited the slaughterhouse through the rear door. A minute? When a madman is firing into a helpless crowd with high-powered, automatic weapons, lives are literally measured in seconds and the one minute response time the chief is so proud of becomes a lifetime for those being targeted.

So what is my point? Am I critical of the Aurora Police Department response? Hell no. What drives me to distraction is that no single individual in that theater was armed and responded to the criminally murderous force with rounds righteously delivered upon the body of the killer from any, any, member of the audience. One armed citizen could have made all the difference here. Yeah, the perp was armored up; so what? A full magazine of 9mm dumped into his armored-up figure would have been a series of hammer blows that most certainly would have altered his murderous course. Imagine yourself on the receiving end of a series of smacks from baseball bat delivered by a large and muscular fellow. That’s what being hit by 9mm rounds at close quarters is like. It’s a game changer and, yes, it could have changed this deranged asshole’s game.

So what’s my point? An armed citizenry, that’s what. Had any one individual in that first few rows of victims had a side-arm that he/she pulled and put into immediate action, even blindly firing a full magazine without aiming, he might well have saved the day and who knows how many lives. He might not have killed the killer but he damned sure would have distracted his aim away from the innocents.

The true American tragedy here is that so many lost their lives because no citizen had the foresight to come to that theater armed and ready to protect himself, his family and his fellow citizens, and yes, the American way of life. We are not a cowering people as our history shows, yet we are now in the thrall of a cowering culture and government that kneels to despots and invites violence upon its citizenry. It is not too much of a stretch to equate America to that theater audience in Aurora: helpless from horrific disaster, yet with our federal government but minutes away when seconds count.

As the Democrats keep telling us, “We don’t need no stinking guns.”

  • If Only…

Personal preface: I don’t watch TV news or the talking heads so I don’t share Jonn’s frustrations about the coverage of the Aurora shooting. I assumed it would be crap and ignored it. And the anti-gun rhetoric was easily foreseeable and as easily dismissed.

Nope! Events like Flight 93 and “Let’s Roll!” kept intruding. Or Mr. Williams decision to take action seems extraordinarily fitting.

So I’m thinking that guns were peripheral (NOT trivial!) elements in that theater. I’ll posit that what was missing was a Sheepdog?

Here is how the sheep and the sheepdog think differently. The sheep pretend the wolf will never come, but the sheepdog lives for that day. After the attacks on September 11, 2001, most of the sheep, that is, most citizens in America said, “Thank God I wasn’t on one of those planes.” The sheepdogs, the warriors, said, “Dear God, I wish I could have been on one of those planes. Maybe I could have made a difference.” When you are truly transformed into a warrior and have truly invested yourself into warriorhood, you want to be there. You want to be able to make a difference.  Lt. Colonel Grossman

If only there had been just one person with that mind set?

    YMMV

Update: See Russ’s post above. I can’t/won’t disagree with his emphasis, but…

  • That gun control thing

Last night, after boycotting the news all day because of the steady stream of misinformation that was being called “news” in relation to the Aurora murders yesterday, I watched local DC news, specifically WUSA9, when my common sense was assaulted by the news reader who fired off a rant about how we’re so willing to defend our second amendment rights, that we caused the blood bath. The idiot went on to tell us how the murderer in question had amassed an AR15, a shotgun, two .40 caliber Glocks and 6,000 rounds of ammunition, and how could we allow that to happen.

Yeah, it’s good thing the news reader can’t see inside my house or he’d crap his pants, because I have way more guns and ammo. Three rifles that he’d call assault weapons, seven handguns and about 10,000 rounds of ammunition. And about 400 rounds are already loaded in my high-capacity magazines. I own them all legally, I always carry one of them loaded – mostly because I can. My wife thought I was just being paranoid, but recent events have either made her just as paranoid, or brought her around to my way of thinking.

So, news reader guy said we needed more laws to prevent people like the Aurora guy from owning guns. How, exactly. He was never diagnosed as being unbalanced, the media uncovered his single brush with the law – a traffic ticket. The only way he could have been prevented from his murderous attack was to stop all of us from buying guns. And that’s what news reader guy was trying to champion with his pointless rant. He wanted my guns.

There are millions of gun owners who have never shot anyone, yet we’re target of the hand-wringing gun grabbers. James Holmes was a coward. When confronted by the police, despite his body armor, he meekly surrendered. If one person in that theater had returned fire, Holmes would have beat his chicken shit feet on the pavement.

If all of the liberals can agree that the Supreme Court’s cure for the stolen valor outbreak is “more speech”, they have to agree that the solution to the gun violence problem is more guns.

  • Recapping what we know about James Holmes

OK, we didn’t know much when we woke up this morning and discovered that James Holmes had shot more than 60 people at a movie showing in Aurora, CO just after midnight. But that didn’t stop ABC from tying the shooter to the TeaParty. Of course, they had to retract that claim because they found a guy whose name was the same as the shooters. A quick check of White Pages says they list 30 James Holmes in Colorado, so what are the odds? Apparently, they just “Googled” James Holmes+Tea Party to fit their perception.

    The Army, certain that the media would speculate whether Holmes was a veteran or not, scanned their databases and determined that he is not one of theirs, says Spencer Ackermann;

The U.S. Army, concerned over speculation that the shooter might have been a veteran — and eager to stifle the meme of the psychotic veteran before it spread — felt compelled to email that a database check of the suspect resulted in “no evidence suggest[ing] this individual served in the Army.” Spokespeople for Buckley Air Force Base, near to Aurora, said servicemembers were among the wounded.

So the Left goes off and blames Rush Limbaugh for the shooter, because ya know everyone who listens to his show is just one command away from shooting up a theater, anyway. Another blogger claims that Holmes is a member of the Black Bloc.

None of the speculation changes the fact that more than 60 people have been shot, some of them are members of the military, and blaming any group or media source detracts from the fact that his guy is a nutjob, and he has no reasonable excuse for what he did and that he is solely responsible for what he did. And anyone taking advantage of this for their own personal or political gains are despicable.

ADDED: As an afterthought I checked AKO to see if the Army had any James Holmes and there are 34, one in Colorado, so I guess we’re lucky that the media doesn’t have access to AKO or we’d be hearing about the shooter being a veteran.

  • The Gun

A pal of mine posted this on FB and it rang the Liberty Bell in my head.

“The rifle itself has no moral stature, since it has no will of its own. Naturally, it may be used by evil men for evil purposes, but there are more good men than evil, and while the latter cannot be persuaded to the path of righteousness by propaganda, they can certainly be corrected by good men with rifles.”
? Jeff Cooper, Art of the Rifle

I’d replace Rifle with Gun in every case, but I sure ain’t Jeff Cooper.

    Hat tip to Mr.  Williams.

  • Today’s feel good video

Old Trooper sends us a link to the story of 71-year-old Samuel Williams who thwarted some playful youths with guns when they tried to rip off Sam’s hangout, the Palms Internet Cafe.

Williams, who lives in Ocala, could not be reached for comment on Monday. But at least one of his 30 fellow patrons at the cafe wants to thank him.

“I think he is wonderful. If he wouldn’t have been there, there could have been some innocent people shot,” said Mary Beach.

Beach was sitting in with her back to the door Friday night and didn’t realize what was happening until she heard shots.

“I heard pop, pop; then pop, pop, pop, all at once,” she said. “In the confusion I never really got to see his (Williams) face.”

Unfortunately, the two crooks survived their wounds, but they’ve been arrested.

You can tell from the video that Sam has been training.
