  • Longer “Collateral Murder” Video Posted

Wikileaks has posted a longer version of the “collateral murder” video without its own commentary yesterday. The longer video (which Wikileaks says is unedited) shows that shortly after 1-16 Infantry arrives on the scene they start taking fire from a nearby building and the Apache has to take that out too. That part starts around 3o:00 in this video:

This longer video reinforces the fact there was pretty intense combat going on in that neighborhood where this Apache and 1-16 Infantry were operating. In what has become typical of the way the war in Iraq has been reported, the coverage of this story has been pretty shallow and leaves out important details. I have been scanning news articles from the AP, Reuters, CNN, MSNBC, and several others and most leave out important details. Almost none of the articles mention that there were RPGs among the insurgents smoked or even attempted to provide any background on how heavy the fighting was in that area. Not to mention there has been little mention of the new video that was posted yesterday. Fucking typical.

  • Who really cares about the Palestinians?

Recently, General Petreaus stated that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict foments “anti-American sentiment” in the Middle East before the Senate. He went into further detail about this belief in a report that he submitted to the Joint Chiefs, that was part of an argument to add Israel to CENTCOM. Although I  think Petreaus’s main motivation behind his statements was to attempt to move Israel in CENTCOM’s AO (which has been debated for years), I take issue with how much the Israeli-Palestinian conflict (more specifically the supposed plight of the Palestinian people) really shapes Arab attitudes toward the US.

There is no doubt that Islamist terrorist groups use the conflict as a propaganda tool against the United States. However, even if we were more forceful with Israel in pushing to make peace or even if we went as far as not to recognize their right to exist, groups like Al Qaida or Hezbollah would still attack us because we do not adhere to their radical version of Islam. Those in the anti-Israel camp (both left and right) like to push the line that the main reason why Al Qaida launches attacks against us is simply because we support Israel, which is of course nonsense. I also do not dispute that there are millions of Arabs who sympathize with the Palestinians and who view the United States as a tool of Israel.

However if you look at how most Arab governments have behaved towards Israel in the last two decades and how they treat their own large Palestinian populations, it is clear that the Arabs aren’t exactly as anti-Israeli and pro-Palestinian as the media portrays them. Even though most Arab governments still don’t recognize the right of Israel to exist, they aren’t opening plotting to destroy Israel anymore and aren’t lending the Palestinians a lot of material support. Even in 2006 when Israel invaded Lebanon, there was no military opposition from other Arab governments. This includes Syria which is arguably the most anti-Israel country in the region had military and political interests in Lebanon. After their complete and utter defeat in five wars at the hands of the Israelis, obviously most Arab governments grew wary of throwing valuable military resources against one of the world’s best fighting forces. In addition, they realized that it really doesn’t matter for them and their people whether or not Israel builds a few new settlements in the West Bank or whether or not Israel occupies Gaza. Most have larger problems to worry about. Granted, at times Israel is convenient punching bag for some Arab leaders to distract their people from their own leadership failures. But the days of that rhetoric turning into serious military action or support for Palestinian terrorist groups seem to be over.

How many Arab countries treat their own Palestinian populations says a lot as well. Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, and Egypt restrict the movement of Palestinians within their own countries and usually confine them to refugee camps. Jordan even fought a war against its Palestinian population in the 1970s. After the PLO supported Saddam Huessin during Desert Storm, most of the wealthy gulf states kicked their Palestinian populations out. Obviously, these Arab governments treat their Palestinians “brothers” worse than the Israelis do.

I’ve talked a lot here about how many people like to paint the Middle East in broad strokes. Again, here is another example of a complex issue that just can’t be simplified to bash American policies in the Middle East.

  • The Two State Question.

I want to shift topic up a bit since what has been happening in the Israel. One of the things that I had thought a while back after the Fatah and the Hamas splitting the West Bank and Gaza was that this was a chance for the Fatah to have a fresh start. That is they really wanted to seek a two state solution that they could do it with having to deal with Hamas.

But it seems that for the most part that the West Bank is not that interesting compared to Gaze. That perhaps a real chance for peace could happen. Then why is Israel so focused on added more settlements in that area? I know that there will be a difference of opinion on this one so I wanted to see what is the point of all this.

I can imagine that Hamas is looking for the next propaganda jackpot and this just plays right into their hand making dealing with Gaze that much harder. More so now since Hamas seems to be falling out of favor since their original elections.

So what good is a few new houses going to do here?

  • No, just no.

Ok this is just beyond stupid. The group Rethink Afghanistan trying to get people to send a pre-made message to the White House’s website that acts as a watchdog for Fraud Waste and Abuse.

That’s why we’re asking you to report the Afghanistan War as an example of waste, fraud and abuse on the White House’s official economic recovery website, Recovery.gov, today. Simply scroll down to the field marked “What” and paste this message into the text box:

“I’d like to report the waste of billions of dollars of our national wealth in Afghanistan on a war that doesn’t make us safer. It’s fraud to portray this as a war that increases our security, and it’s abusive of U.S. troops and local civilians to drag out this war any longer. End the war so we can have real economic recovery.”

Really? I mean you really want people to take you seriously trying to pull stunts like this? What about the people that have real issues that need to be looked at. What your doing is encouraging the abuse of government resources wasting time looking at your political spam.

Also some crazy to go out on.

Americans only care about healthcare. They have ignored this abuse of power. If we didn’t spend so much on the wars, we’d have enough to pay for our OWN healthcare! We are taxed to death. Paying for these unconstitutional wars and other unconstitutional spending. People are just so stupid! Plus, the cost of caring for all … See Morethe vets with mental and physical repercussions from these illegal wars helps to bankrupt America. People just don’t get it! I’m so mad and frustrated with them!

    No, just…no.

  • The Truthers Have A Friend in Iran

    From the AP/Yahoo:

TEHRAN, Iran – Iran’s hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has again questioned the official version of the Sept. 11 attacks in the U.S., calling it a “big lie” used as an excuse to invade Afghanistan and Iraq.

This is of course from the same guy who denies the Holocaust ever happened.  This is also the same nut we are expected to negotiate with and reach a diplomatic solution over his country’s nuclear program? Ridiculous.

  • Ingrates

Apparently, Old Europe wants us to pull our nukes out of Europe according to a Stars & Stripes article.

The countries — Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Norway — will discuss the issue with the rest of their NATO allies at a November summit in Lisbon, Portugal.

“This does not mean a call for an immediate withdrawal for all these weapons,” Bart Ouvry, spokesman for Belgium’s Foreign Ministry, said by telephone on Thursday.

Ouvry declined to elaborate, saying he would reserve further comments for his partners at the NATO meetings.

The Federation of American Scientists, using information gathered from public records, has calculated in recent years that nuclear weapons were removed from Ramstein Air Base, Germany, and RAF Lakenheath, England. Based on inspection data, the group said, that means U.S. nuclear weapons in northern Europe remain at Büchel Air Base, Germany; Kleine Brogel Air Base, Belgium; and Volkel Air Base in the Netherlands. The majority of U.S. nuclear weapons are thought to be kept at three bases around the Mediterranean Sea: Aviano Air Base and Ghedi Air Base in Italy and Incirlik Air Base in Turkey.

Fine if they want to remove the single class of weapons that has kept the peace in Europe for the longest period in it’s history, pull ’em out tomorrow – along with the troops that stalwartly faced East for six decades. Move them forward so they can ground guide the Russians through New Europe. Maybe Luxembourg can hold back the onslaught by themselves.

Like I’ve said here before, the most grateful Germans lived within sight of the intra-German border, heard the mines detonate and listened to the dogs tearing apart human bodies during failed escape attempts. It’s time to give them what they’ve wanted since the Reagan Administration – the view down the bore of an AK47.

  • Iranian Influence in Iraq: Getting the Facts Straight

A frequent argument against American policies in Iraq is that we have in essence made Iraq a proxy state of Iran by removing the Baathist regime and allowing the Shia majority to take control of a majority of the new government. This argument has become more frequently used to the attack the war in Iraq, especially in the wake of the Surge and declining violence in Iraq. With the parliamentary elections next week, some in the media have said that these elections will in effect enable Iran to dominate Iraq. However, to say that Iran currently wields or will eventually gain complete control over the current Iraqi government or Shia majority is to ignore many facts about the complexities of Iraq’s cultural and politics. There is no doubt that Iran has influence over certain Shia political groups and armed militias. However, there are ethnic, political, and foreign factors that prevent Iran from completely dominating Iraq.

  • Stupid round eyes! Is Floormats!

    Rhonda Smith’s testimony to Congress today;

“I thought I’d have to put it into the guard rail before I hurt anyone else. I called my husband with the blue tooth. I knew (she cries) he could not help me but I wanted to hear his voice. After 6 miles God intervened. As the car came very slowly to a stop I pulled it to the left median with the car stopped and both feet on the brake the motor still reved up and down at 35 mph and would not shut off. Finally at 33 mph I was able to turn the engine off.

“After my husband arrived there was nothing unusual with the floormats, the dash lights and radio were still on. the wrecker driver asked my hsubnd to put my car in neutral so he could use the winch. My husband was able to shift into neutral, but when he did that, the car tried to start itself. The wrecker driver attested to this. After ten days Toyota did not contact us. We received an analysis stating “if properly maintained the brakes will always override the accelerator.” Well that’s a lie!

I’ve been warning for years that Toyota have been selling shitbox death traps in Central America – now it’s come here.

Remember, Tom Clancy predicted the war between the US and Japan would start over their shitbox cars.
