    Sunday morning feel good stories

    From TEXARKANA, TX

One man is dead after an alleged early-morning robbery attempt in Texarkana Texas, according to the Texarkana Texas Police Department.

At 2:28 AM, TTPD officers were dispatched to a report of a robbery at a residence in the 800 block of Bowie Street. Dispatch advised officers the caller had indicated he shot someone who had been trying to rob him.

Upon their arrival, officers made contact with Joseph Walker, 32 of Texarkana, Texas, who lived at the residence.

Officers also located Rodney Richardson, 40, of Texarkana, Texas, lying on the ground near the porch of the home. Richardson was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

During the preliminary investigation, Walker told officers he parked his vehicle in the front yard and began walking to his house.

As he was walking, Walker said Richardson began walking toward him and asked for a ride.

Walker stated he didn’t know Richardson, so he told him he wouldn’t give him a ride and continued onto his front porch to enter his home. Walker advised Richardson then threatened to take his keys and other belongings.

Richardson started to grab something from his waistband, Walker claimed, adding he thought Richardson had a weapon on him, so he began to back down the stairs of the porch and away from him.

Walker advised Richardson continued walking toward him in an aggressive manner and at that point Richardson was shot.

Richardson was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Walker was transported to the Bi-State Justice Center to the Criminal Investigation Division, where he was interviewed and later released. During the investigation of the scene, Officers were unable to locate a weapon on Richardson.

  • Saturday morning feel good stories

    From Miami, FL

A man found dead floating in the mangroves off Marathon last Friday morning died from stab wounds he received the night before while he brutally attacked a woman with a machete, police say.

The woman, Crystal Marie Young, 45, will likely not be charged in the death of Gustavo Torna Aguado, 58, because Monroe County Sheriff’s Office detectives say it appears to be a case of self defense.

Young told police Torna Aguado attacked her on board her sailboat moored in Boot Key Harbor Thursday night, Sept. 27.  Although she was severely wounded by the machete’s blade, with deep cuts to her head, arms, hands and other parts of her body, she was able to grab a knife and stab Torna Aguado “in self defense,” sheriff’s office spokesman Adam Linhardt said Thursday.

Linhardt said the State Attorney’s Office has to review the facts of the case and will ultimately decide whether to press charges.

A neighbor found Young badly bleeding on her boat and called 911. She was flown to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami. She was released from the hospital Wednesday, Linhardt said.

Following the attack, deputies, officers with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, members of the U.S. Coast Guard and agents with U.S. Customs and Border Protection searched boat to boat in Boot Key Harbor for her attacker. They found Torna Aguado’s dinghy in the mangroves that night, but did not find him until around 10:30 a.m.Friday, Sept. 28.

Boot Key Harbor is on the Atlantic Ocean side of the city of Marathon in the Middle Keys. It is a popular spot for those living on their boats, known locally as “liveaboards.” Torna Aguado was also a liveaboard in Boot Key Harbor, but did not live with Young, Linhardt said.

The two knew each other and may have dated, Linhardt said.

“There are no other suspects in this case,” he said.

    From  Mill Creek, UT

Shelby Hamilton’s first thought as she lay bruised and bleeding on the ground of a Millcreek Starbucks was that she didn’t want to die this way. It would be a painful way to go.

It all began while Hamilton was working an early morning shift at the coffee shop near 3900 South and 900 East Thursday morning. Hamilton was standing behind the counter when a “haggard-looking” man entered, she said.

Instead of coming to the register to order, the man came behind the counter and asked Hamilton if she knew who he was. When she replied that she didn’t, he became angry and began beating her with his fists, she said.

“It was all just kind of random. I didn’t really know him. … He just came in the door and hit me in the back of the head from behind,” Hamilton told KSL.com.

She backed up and tried to put distance between herself and the man, but once she reached the end of the counter, she was trapped — and he continued hitting her. Hamilton’s co-workers, however, remained frozen, unsure what to do, she said.

“I started to think why no one was helping me, ‘cause he was only hitting me, and I felt kind of angry for a moment,” she said.

Before Hamilton had much time to ponder the question, however, the man picked up a metal supply basket and hit her on the side of the head. Hamilton crumpled, and the man continued kicking her in the back. The only thought left in her mind: “I don’t want to die this way.”

As soon as she fell to the ground, however, her co-workers ran out the door and began screaming for help. The next thing Hamilton knew, the man had stopped beating her and gone back around the counter.

Soon after, she heard a gunshot.

“The first thought in my head was that this had turned into a shooting,” she said. “My second thought was … he just shot my friends, and my third thought was … he’s going to come back here and shoot me.”

Hamilton said she crawled under the counter to hide from the would-be shooter, but it was the police that found her soon after. It was then she overheard on one of the officers’ radios that her attacker had been shot by a customer.

“My honest thought? I just hoped that he was dead,” she said.

Unified Police Lt. Ken Hansen confirmed later that the attacker was shot by a man in his late 60s who saw what was happening while visiting the shop for his morning coffee. The customer drew the man’s attention, and the attacker began to approach him.

As he came closer, the customer pulled out a gun and shot the attacker once in the chest, Hansen said. The man then stumbled out of the store.

Police arrived shortly after and used a Taser to take Benjamin Overall, 37, into custody. They then realized that Overall had been shot and summoned medical help for both Hamilton and Overall, Hansen said. Police believe Overall may have mental health issues, Hansen added.

Overall was transported to a hospital in serious condition — though he has since been upgraded to satisfactory. Hamilton was transported in fair condition, though she’s since been released — albeit with a black eye, swollen face, cuts and bruises covering her hands and back.

Hamilton is grateful, however, that she’s alive. And especially grateful for the man with a gun who she said is a frequent customer.

“I know his drink,” she said. “He comes in every morning and gets a large, blonde coffee in his personal cup. He’s always been very sweet. He’s always been very patient.”

Hamilton was initially surprised, however, when she heard he had shot the attacker.

“I never would have expected that from him,” she said. “He just seemed like a very meek guy. So I was surprised, but also very grateful. I was very grateful that he was there. And I was glad it was somebody we see regularly so that hopefully, in the future, I can thank him.”

The customer has a concealed carry permit, Hansen said, and, though he doesn’t know for sure if the customer will face charges, he believes the shooting can be interpreted as self-defense. The customer is being “very cooperative” with police, Hansen added.

“We are thankful all partners (employees) and customers are safe after going through such a terrifying experience,” Starbucks said in an emailed statement. “Our focus is on supporting our partners at this time. We are grateful local authorities were there to help and would direct any further questions their way.”

In 2013, Starbucks made a request that customers not bring firearms into its stores or outdoor eating areas, but the company specified that it was a request and not an outright ban.

As for Hamilton, she’s just happy someone was there.

“I’m just really grateful to be alive, and I’m thankful for everyone who was there to help me,” she said.

Police in Albuquerque say a homeowner has fatally shot a suspected burglar who was breaking into his Foothills home.

Officers were called to the house on reports of a shooting about 5 a.m. Thursday.

When police arrived, they reported finding a man dead in the driveway of a townhouse.

A man and woman who live in the home told police that an alarm alerted them to a break-in.

The man fired at least one shot at the intruder.

Police have not identified the dead man and haven’t released the names of the homeowners.

They say the case will be turned over to the District Attorney’s Office to see if anyone should be charged.

    From Titusville, FL

Axel Rivera, 28, was wearing a two-piece jail outfit and a pair of flip-flops when he faced a judge Friday afternoon on charges of burglary and exposing sexual organs.

That’s three more items of clothing than Titusville police said Rivera was wearing when he was discovered on Pennelope Pettersen’s screened porch around 2 a.m.

“I always look first. I opened the blinds and said, ‘What the hell? That’s not my cat,’” said Pettersen.

Pettersen, who once worked in security and law enforcement, decided she’d give the intruder a fright.
    She popped out her teeth.

    “Grandma no teeth!” she shouted.

At Rivera’s first appearance hearing, the prosecutor said alcohol may have been a factor.

He’s being held at the Brevard County jail on $20,000 bail.

Trespasser shot in barn where horse was molested in August.

The owner of a barn near Sandtown, where a miniature horse was violated with an object in August, shot a man trespassing in the barn on Tuesday night.

State police said the homeowners of a house on Pony Track Road, a 73-year-old man and his 65-year-old wife, went to the barn around 9:30 p.m. after an alarm alerted them to an intruder. There was a 45-year-old man inside and the male homeowner shot him in the legs, state police said.

State police said they’re investigating the incident as a burglary and as a shooting. State police said the man was taken to the hospital, but no charges have been filed yet.

Police wouldn’t say whether the incidents are related, but in August someone entered the barn and assaulted a horse inside. The Delmarva Equine Clinic in a Facebook post said the animal had been “sexually molested” with an object, which caused serious trauma.

“My best guess is it wasn’t a human, but most likely an object,” said Dr. Amy Franklin at Country Roads Veterinary Service, who treated the miniature horse after the August attack. “I have never seen anything quite like this in 18 years of practice.”

Police have not said whether the incidents are related.

Orangeburg County deputies say a man shot at a suspect who was breaking into his home.

Michael Rowe, 37, has been charged with second-degree burglary and breaking and entering into an automobile.

Sheriff Leroy Ravenell said just before 8 a.m.., Rowe tried to break into a home in the area. The homeowner told officers he heard a noise, then found the suspect inside his house.

The homeowner grabbed a gun, and Rowe starting trying to get away. Deputies say the homeowner fired three shots at the suspect, but none of them hit him. The homeowner then called 911.

Responding officers were able to find Rowe about 500 yards from the home.

“This individual is lucky to be in jail,” the sheriff said. “He could have been in the care of the county coroner’s office.”

Rowe faces up to 15 years in prison for the burglary charge alone, if convicted of the crime.

    From Mobile, Al

There have been several instances of Mobile County homeowners recently standing up to intruders.

A California mother held a burglar at gunpoint in her home until police arrived Sunday morning, and it was all caught on surveillance cameras.

According to police, 25-year-old Aoreliorho Velasco snuck into Brittany Morse’s home in Taft and stayed there for three hours.

“He approached our house around 6:19 in the morning. I didn’t find him until 9 a.m.,” Morse said.

But the warning signs came early on.

“We woke up in the morning and my kids were saying, ‘your laptop’s missing,’ and I was just on it the night before,” Morse said.

While searching for her laptop, her seven-year-old daughter Aubrey first noticed Velasco their garage.

“She opened the door, she sees him there and slams it shut–screaming, running back to me,” Morse explained.

Morse shuttled her children into one room, then grabbed the gun she bought just two weeks ago. She cornered him from the doorway of the garage as she called 911.

“I told the dispatch, ‘I believe he has a knife on him.’ And I told him, ‘you come near me, you take one step toward me, I will shoot you,’” she said.

Taft police showed up in two minutes. In a news release, they said Velasco used the rear garage door to enter their home.

The most valuable thing he took was Morse’s laptop. He also stole food.

“He went through my purse. He didn’t take my credit cards; he didn’t take the money I had in my purse. He took bananas,” she said.

Taft police say they haven’t seen a case like this.

If he would’ve come in the house while me and my children were awake, I don’t know what he would’ve done. But I wasn’t going to sit there and find out,” Morse said.

Taft police say Velasco was booked into Taft City Jail for first-degree burglary. He also has an outstanding misdemeanor warrant for possession of drug paraphernalia. He is due in court on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The shooting was reported around 12:35 a.m. PDT Saturday, and upon arriving, deputies found the man, identified as Raphael Bhatti, 25, of Thousand Oakseway. Deputies confirmed Bhatti had suffered a gunshot wound.

He was taken to a local hospital, and although serious, the wound was not life-threatening, authorities said.

Meanwhile, authorities were also dispatched at about the same time to the Villa De Los Robles apartment complex inThousand Oaks, which is nearby. The female victim was found at an apartment and also taken to a hospital for treatment of her injuries, authorities said.

Authorities said they learned Bhatti had held the woman against her will for several hours in an apartment. While the victim was in the apartment, Bhatti injured her, pointed a firearm at her and threatened to kill her, sexually battered her and used force to prevent her from leaving, according to authorities.

The woman was eventually able to take the gun when Bhatti was distracted and shoot him in self-defense, according to Sgt. Eric Buschow of the Thousand Oaks Police Department.

    From Carrollton, TX

A Denton County grand jury will decide what charges a man should face for shooting and critically injuring another man at a JV football game in Carrollton Thursday night.

Police say the shooter and witnesses claim the shooting was in self-defense at the JV game between Hebron High School and Irving Nimitz

The injured man is in critical condition. Police expect the shooter to at least be charged for having a gun on school property.

The man who was shot did not want to press charges, but Carrollton police say the case may go forward anyway.

“It makes me a little leery tonight, so I’m glad I came early to calm my daughter’s fears,” she said.

“Everybody was obviously shaken,” said Hebron fan Jenny Reynolds. “But everybody’s been kind of reassured. There’s been counselors at their school.”

Police had extra presence at Friday night’s varsity game in Irving to calm everyone’s concerns.

Police aren’t releasing the men’s names. From witness accounts, it appears a 47-year-old man from Carrollton feared for his life and shot a 31-year-old Fort Worth man in self-defense. It started inside the stadium at the JV game but escalated when it spilled out into the parking lot.

“We do have several witnesses who say the man who ended up shot was the primary aggressor in the stands and was causing disturbances for a lot of people in the stands,” said police spokesperson Jolene DeVito. “And it ended up focused on this one man.”

Police haven’t said what started the argument but say the men didn’t know each other.

The police department will leave it up to a grand jury to determine if the shooter should be charged for the shooting or be cleared. But according to police, he’s expected to be indicted on one of two other charges for having a gun at a high school game. Unlawful carrying of a weapon or carrying a weapon in a prohibited place. One is a felony while the other a misdemeanor.

“They are somewhat in conflict the way the laws are written,” DeVito said. “So we, in consultation with the district attorney’s office, decided in this case with these facts it’s best to take it to the grand jury to decide what to do in that case.”

Lewisville ISD says guns are not allowed on any school property, according to state law.

JV games typically have a smaller crowd and don’t always have officers present, but that could be re-evaluated in the future.
