  • More Citizens Prevent Crime

Here’s a few more stories I’m betting you won’t hear much about on the nightly news:

Hollywood, FL: a gas-station clerk puts a would-be robber away – for keeps. A second would-be robber escaped initially but was captured by police afterwards.

NE Miami-Dade, FL: a robber attempts to ply his trade and runs into an armed resident.  The robber does not survive the encounter.

San Antonio, TX:  a resident hears noise, grabs his gun, and goes outside.  There the resident confronts two thieves ransacking his SUV in an apparent attempt to steal it.  One would-be thief survives; the other does not.  No charges are expected against the resident.

In each case above, an armed private citizen – acting lawfully – protected his life or property, preventing a felony in the process.

But remember, folks:  according to our liberal brethren those guns are nasty terrible things whose only legitimate use is hunting.  You don’t need them to protect yourself, your loved ones, or your property.

  • Years Ago, Even Generals Had a Sense of Humor

Given all the “heavy” material on TAH the past day or two, I thought it might be time now for something completely different.  (And no, it’s not a story about “a man with three buttocks”.)

An earlier article on humorous military “gotchas” and the reader comments it generated seemed to be enjoyed by many.  Well, the other day I remembered a story from years ago – one which shows that back then, at least some Generals had a sense of humor. So I thought I’d share it with TAH’s readers.

Unlike the first article, I can’t personally vouch for the truth of the story that follows.  I didn’t witness the incident or see the documents allegedly involved. Since the individual said to be the central figure has passed away, I’ll also refrain from identifying him or the time frame.  But having been stationed at the same installation about the time this is alleged to have happened – and having met the GO who was allegedly involved, briefly, and heard him speak once or twice – I won’t dismiss it out of hand, either.

Botom line:  dunno for sure if the story is legit.  But it being true would not shock me.  This particular GO was quite a guy.

He was charismatic, energetic – and walked to the beat of a somewhat different drummer.  He was SF-qualified and had spent substantial time in SF units.  But in spite of that, he had been selected to wear stars. (I say “in spite of that” because years ago, “Big Army” had a pronounced bias against officers who spent too much time in Special Forces; it was unusual for any officer who spent very much time in the SF community to be selected for promotion to BG.)

He was sharp as a razor and didn’t suffer fools easily. But he also had a pretty good sense of humor, too.

His men loved him. He was one helluva leader.

He also reputedly expected documents coming to him for signature to be correct, with zero typos.  And therein begins the story I heard.

  • “Hugo Chavez is Not in a Coma”

At least that’s what his older brother Adan says.  He also says Hugo is “improving daily”.  And he says rumors to the contrary are being spread by “necrophiliac opposition” as part of an anti-Chavez conspiracy.

Adan, amigo – I do not think that word means what you think it means.  At least, not in this context.  Wondering if someone who appears to have vanished for over a month after their third fourth cancer surgery in 18 months might be in a coma is hardly an “excessive preoccupation with death”; it’s a reasonable question.  And, frankly, at this point I’ll need a little more than your word before I’ll believe your brother is “not in a coma” and is “improving daily”.

Maybe Adan is telling the truth – well, except for that part about the necrophiliac opposition, which is obviously bull.  But it’s interesting that Hugo Chavez – a bona fide lover of the limelight – has not been seen or heard from since his last cancer surgery over a month ago (Dec 11).  No photos.  No recorded statements.  No written statements. No interviews – either with Hugo or his doctors.  Nada.

All we’ve heard are statements that Hugo Chavez is “doing well” by people who have a vested interest in his remaining in power.

Sorry, but not being heard from for over a month rather argues against him “doing well” or “improving” a helluva lot.  If Hugo Chavez is “doing well” and “improving daily”, why haven’t we heard squat from him?

I also find it curious that a reported friend of Hugo Chavez – Argentine President Cristina Fernandez – recently went to visit him.  She was questioned by reporters afterwards.  Perhaps significantly, Fernandez did not indicate she had actually seen or met with Hugo Chavez during her trip to see him.  She also did not confirm Adan Chavez’s statements, indicating that she felt Hugo’s condition was a family matter and that she felt it would be “inappropriate” for her to comment.

Somehow, that sounds more to me like a deliberate sidestep of the question than a true concern for the Chavez family’s privacy.  But I guess I could be wrong.

In any case:  whether Hugo Chavez is in a coma or not, it’s obvious he’s incommunicado and incapacitated.  Whether he recovers is the proverbial “$64 question”.

Based on what’s known of his medical history, I wouldn’t give good odds on his survival.  But, like a cockroach Hugo Chavez is a natural survivor.  He might well survive this surgery, too.

But I don’t think he’s going to be around terribly long if he does.

  • Somebody’s Got Some ‘Splainin’ to Do . . . Again

This time, it’s be the captain and some of the crew of the USS Jacksonville, an SSN (nuclear attack sub) who need to do a bit of ” ‘splainin’ “.  Seems the USS Jacksonville ran into something in the Persian Gulf the other day, sustaining minor damage.

Thankfully the collision was apparently a minor “brush”.  The other vessel – believed to have been a fishing trawler – did not stop, did not indicate distress, and indeed did not even indicate it even realized there had been a mishap.  The USS Jacksonville, however, lost one of its periscopes – which was sheared off during the collision.

The collision occurred at 5AM local, just after the USS Jacksonville had passed through the Strait of Hormuz.

There were no reported deaths or injuries.  But I’d guess several careers may well end up casualties.

If you’re thinking this sounds kinda familiar, it should.  This is the second collision in the Persian Gulf between a US warship and a merchant vessel in the last five months.

  • This Week’s Friday Feel-Good

This one’s a triple-goodie: a criminal takes a hit, a dog is saved, and a gun-owner uses his gun to protect his abode.  It actually happened a bit over a week ago, but I missed writing an article about it then.

Seems a naked guy climbed up onto the front porch of a house at about 5AM in the “Little Haiti” section of the greater Miami area.  The intruder then tried to choke one of the homeowner’s dogs – a Rottweiler.  When the homeowner came to the scene to see what was going on, the intruder – who was totally naked at the time – then attacked the homeowner and began choking and biting him.

Unfortunately for the naked guy, the homeowner was packing heat.  He fired twice, hitting the suspect in the foot once.  This did not deter the intruder, who continued to assault the homeowner.  The homeowner attempted to fire a third time, but his gun jammed.

The homeowner was finally able to pin down his naked attacker and hold him while members of his family called police.  He continued to restrain the guy until police arrived.

When the police arrived, the naked guy tried to bite them too.

No, I’m not making this stuff up – I’m completely serious.  And yes, other accounts of the incident do indeed indicate that police believe the intruder may have been “under the influence of drugs”.

Drugs involved.  Gee – ya think?

The naked guy – identified as Jeffery Delice, 20 – is expected to recover fully.  So are the homeowner and the dog.

However, Delice has a few little legal problems at present.  He’s currently charged with  assault, resisting arrest with violence, lewd and lascivious behavior, and animal cruelty.  Delice also has prior arrests – but no convictions – for possession of marijuana, armed robbery, and assault.

I guess this is just another case of “overreaction” by one of those gun nuts and their scary, evil guns.

  • Well, This Is New

A suspect is in custody in Florida today after attempting – unsuccessfully – to rob a convenience store.

Of course, someone trying to rob a convenience store is nothing new.  What was novel was the would-be robber’s choice of weapon – a cattle prod

    Seriously.

The would-be robber, 26-year-old Lance Tomberlin, actually used his cattle prod on the clerk more than once.  And it looks like that ended up being his undoing.

You see, the store clerk was exercising his right to “concealed carry” – and decided enough was enough.  The clerk produced his pistol.  (No word on whether or not the clerk also produced his rapier, or told the would-be robber to “stand and deliver”.  [smile])

Tomberlin then left the store pronto and was later apprehended by Leon County, FL, sheriff’s deputies.  He is now in custody, awaiting trial on charges of armed robbery and aggravated battery.

Chalk up another crime prevented by those “gun nuts” with their “evil guns”.

And no, MCPO NYC – you don’t get a prize if you can ID the musical reference.  (smile)

  • Sometimes Truth is Stranger Than Fiction

Ran across this little gem today:

For those of us fighting for our traditional rights, the US 2nd Amendment is a rare light in an ever darkening room. Governments will use the excuse of trying to protect the people from maniacs and crime, but are in reality, it is the bureaucrats protecting their power and position. In all cases where guns are banned, gun crime continues and often increases. As for maniacs, be it nuts with cars (NYC, Chapel Hill NC), swords (Japan), knives (China) or home made bombs (everywhere), insane people strike. They throw acid (Pakistan, UK), they throw fire bombs (France), they attack. What is worse, is, that the best way to stop a maniac is not psychology or jail or “talking to them”, it is a bullet in the head, that is why they are a maniac, because they are incapable of living in reality or stopping themselves.

Is the above from an NRA staffer?  Or from some “right-wing gun nut”?

Hardly.  The above is from a column published in Pravda.  Yes, that Pravda – the one published in the former Soviet Union.

People in the former Soviet Union know a thing or two about how sanctioned government oppression works, and what allows it.  We should listen to them.

The entire article is worth a read.  It’s also worth sharing.

  • Agenda Confirmed; Mechanism Identified?

“Confiscation could be an option. Mandatory sale to the state could be an option. Permitting could be an option — keep your gun but permit it.”

    Gov. Andrew Cuomo, D-N.Y.

Yeah, he was allegedly talking  last week about a new potential ban on “assault weapons” (whatever the hell those are) might work in NY.  But everyone knows that’s merely a convenient “stalking horse” for their real agenda:  gutting the 2nd Amendment.

But he’s apparently not alone.  As Jonn noted here a few minutes ago, it looks like that “great scholar” Biden is also considering recommending the POTUS practice legislation via Executive Order on this issue.  I’m guessing Joe the Scholar is recommending that since he knows chances of getting any kind of meaningful Federal gun control law passed anytime soon are about the same as those of a June or July snowfall in Phoenix, AZ.  Even many of his Democratic colleagues aren’t that crazy.

But what does the Left have to lose?  When you can’t get what you want legally, illegal subterfuge is just about all you have left.
