  • North Korea Makes Bang-Bang

In case anyone missed it:  North Korea conducted a nuclear test overnight.  It’s estimated to have had an explosive yield of 6 to 7 kilotons – or between 1/3 and 1/2 the yield of those used during World War II.

Even China was not amused, and reportedly summoned the North Korean ambassador to their foreign ministry for immediate consultations.

Perhaps the UN will actually grow a pair and impose meaningful sanctions this time.  As the kid in “Angels in the Outfield” said:  “Hey, it could happen!” – but I’m not holding my breath.

No word yet on when the hermit state plans to begin growing sufficient food to feed itself, or to provide a reasonable standard of living for their proletariat.

  • Does “Global Warming” Influence Asteroids?

No, of course not – they’re exoatmospheric.  But apparently at least one CNN anchor thinks it does.

CNN’s Deborah Feyerick interviewed Bill “The Science Guy” Nye on air recently.  After discussing the recent New England blizzard with Nye and it’s possible connection to “global warming”, she asked him the following question:

“Talk about something else that’s falling from the sky and that is an asteroid. What’s coming our way? Is this an effect of, perhaps, of global warming, or is this just some meteoric occasion?”

Yes, teh stoopid appears strong in this one.  As does the agenda.

Such biased and ignorant sources are the main source of most Americans’ “news”, such as it is.  And many Americans are so scientifically illiterate they don’t know they’re being had.

  • This Week’s Friday Feel-Good

Elbert Wood, 93, of Houston, TX, is a USMC World War II veteran. He came home from a medical appointment on January 21st.

His home had been vandalized. Two juvenile “little darlings” had broken in. They’d spray-painted many of the walls, furnishings, carpets, and appliances.

Wood served in the Pacific in World War II. He was wounded in action twice. He also recently lost his wife – 19 days before the incident, to be precise. Let’s just say he deserved better than this.

Just another case of big-city vandalism and taking advantage of the elderly, eh? Perhaps. But here’s where the story takes a good turn.

Seems as if word of what happened to Mr. Wood got around. Independently, many pitched in to help.

Like MAJ Roberto Rodriguez, A/1/23d Marines – and his troops. They went to the man’s home to help.

On arrival, they were joined by a group of contractors laid-on by a local radio station. So instead of doing clean-up work, the Marines instead cleared the entire house so the contractors could do a better job while doing the rehab.

GruntLife – a vets organization – also got wind of the incident. They started a fundraiser to send Wood and his children on a trip to DC to visit the World War II memorial and the National Museum of the Marine Corps. The fundraiser achieved its initial target of $5,000 within 72 hours.

The revised plan is to send Woods’ children to accompany him to DC in April as well. They’re well on the way to making that happen.

No, this won’t make the incident “go away”. It happened; nothing can change history. But it does help mitigate the damage done to Mr. Wood – both that done to his property and his dignity.

And it also shows that, while there are indeed many jerks among us, there are also those who still give a damn.

  • Getting Screwed by the IRS . . . .

    Literally.

A man in Oregon has filed a lawsuit alleging that an IRS agent forced him to have sex in order to avoid tax penalties.

I have no idea if the man’s claim is true or not. Frankly, to me it sounds more like some teenage guy’s fantasy.  Or maybe the plot to a bad 70s porn movie.

But given the story Jonn posted earlier today – and the one posted by TSO immediately afterwards – well, I hesitate to dismiss it out of hand as bogus.  Stuff that used to be considered outrageous is today rather common.

And if I’ve learned anything in life, it’s this:  no matter what you’ve seen or heard, when it comes to sex you just ain’t seen or heard it all yet.

  • So, Do Strict Gun Control Laws Really Lower Crime?

Just ask the folks in Massachusetts.

In 1998, Massachusetts overhauled their gun laws.  Gun purchase and ownership was restricted significantly by the changes.

Since 1998, murders using firearms have risen 87.7 percent; aggravated assaults, 26.7 percent; and robberies using firearms, 20.7 percent.  In contrast, during that same time frame the population of Massachusettes rose only approximately 7.0 percent – from 6.175 million in 1998 to 6.607 million in 2011.

Yep – stricter gun control laws work really well to reduce crime, don’t they?

  • Another Comes Home

Another fallen brother-in-arms returns home to receive belated final honors.

Naval aviator LT Richard Laws was lost over North Vietnam in 1966. At the time, he was assigned to Attack Squadron 24 operating from the USS Hancock.

At the time, he was presumed dead.

His remains were later recovered.  However, at the time of recovery they could not be positively identified.

Recent DNA testing has confirmed that the remains are indeed those of LT Laws.  He will be interred at the US Naval Academy on May 10, 2013.

Welcome home, my elder brother-in-arms.  Welcome home at last.

  • Anti-Gun Overreaction, Part 2

Well, it appears we have another installment in the never-ending saga of “stupid overreaction tricks” concerning guns.  This one comes to us courtesy of a school in Arizona.

Poston Butte High School in Florence, AZ, issues its students laptop computers.  Since these are school property, the school mandates that they not be used for “sending or displaying offensive messages or pictures.”  Students also cannot send, create, forward, or access pictures that are “harassing, threatening, or illegal.”

This policy recently got a young man in trouble.  A freshman student downloaded the picture of an AK-47 lying on what appears to be the flag of the Former Socialist Republic of Yugoslavia.  He liked the picture and made that his Windows wallpaper background.

That’s it.  No depiction of shooting, no threatening or obscene message, no picture of anyone getting shot or shot at, no “blood and guts”.  Just a photo of a static display consisting of a former Communist state’s flag with the iconic weapon of the Soviet era lying on it.

A teacher saw the “scary photo” – and turned the youngster in.  The school initially suspended the young man for 3 days for violating “school policy” regarding laptop use for using the photo as his Windows wallpaper.  When pressed, they later shortened his suspension to one day.

I’m not kidding.  Here’s the article – along with a video showing the “scary and threatening photo” in question.

Apparently they hire idiots with no common sense to work at Poston Butte High School.  Sheesh.

  • A Super Bowl Sunday Article to Make You Think

Many of TAH’s readers follow sports somewhere between occasionally and religiously.  I’d put myself somewhere in that range.

So I thought I’d post this in honor of the Super Bowl Sunday – though it’s more generic than footbal-specific.

Since we follow sports, most of us also unfortunately have heard more about performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) than we probably wish we had.  And we’ve seen more than a few sports “heroes” turn out to have feet of clay, too.

A fellow named Bill Simmons has written an interesting article on the issue.  It’s one of the single best and most thought-provoking articles I’ve read on the subject recently.  You may or may not agree with Simmons – but the article, though fairly long, is IMO worth a read.

Simmons’ article can be found here.  I found it well worth the time.  YMMV.
