  • Good News – and Bad News

Three unconfirmed news reports out of the Syria/Iraq area today. One is good news; the others, bad.

First, the bad news – which hopefully will turn out to be wrong:

Islamic State group beheads US aid worker

Also, Kurdish leaders are claiming that ISIS/ISIL/whatever the hell they’re calling themselves these days are 200,000 strong – 7 or 8 times larger than the foreign intel estimates (up to 31,500).

Now, some good news (which I obviously hope is true):

Got him! Jihadi John is ‘wounded in US airstrike that killed 10 top ISIS commanders at secret bunker meeting in Iraq’

Again: hopefully the first story will turn out to be false. As for the second, assuming it’s true . . . may you fail to recover, “Jihadi John” – then meet Shaytan and burn in hell. Forever.

  • More “Global Warming” News

Accuweather: Rockies, Plains See Coldest November Weather in Decades. Coldest, as in 30 to 50 degrees F below normal from Wyoming to Texas.

Northern Wisconsin Town Gets 4+ Feet of Snow in Mid-November. No, that’s not a misprint – 4+ feet (50.3 inches, to be precise). And it was the first snow of the season.

Sault St. Marie, MI: 2 Feet of New Snow. Ispeming, MI, area: 3 Feet of Snow on the Ground. That’s a months’ worth of snow in a single day for those areas. And long-term forecasts say any break in the cold weather won’t happen for at least a week.

Erie, PA:  Over a Foot of Snow.  Yeah, that’s a record, too. And parts of Ohio and western New York also were predicted to get hit yesterday as well.

What do Burlington, CO; Casper, WY; Denver, CO; Livingston, MT; Riverton, WY; Amarillo, TX; Lubbock, TX;  Childress, TX; and Goodland, TX, Have in Common?  They all broke low-temperature records for either daily high, daily low, or both this week.

Yep. Global warming is obviously at work here. What else could possibly explain record early cold weather and snowfalls after a much cooler-than-normal summer; a nearly two-decade pause in any conceivable data supporting the global warming     fund-soliciting-fairy tale     thesis; recent snow in Baghdad and Cairo for the first time in 60 to 100 years; and generally declining temperatures since the 1930s?

  • Cheer Up, NHSparky

Here ya go, bud.  Since you have to put up with a      Shaheed        Shaheen for a Senator for a while, I thought I’d post something here that might cheer ya up a bit.

Yeah, the second title is indeed an election reference. (smile)

And, since it wouldn’t be Gabriel without something a bit avant-garde (and perhaps somewhat dark and disturbing):

    Enjoy.

  • More “Words of Wit and Wisdom” from Jonathan Gruber

Well, there he goes again. And again.

    And he’s getting paid, too.

Remember Jonathan Gruber?  Apparently the 3 videos I discussed yesterday – showing Gruber repeatedly calling the US public “stupid” – weren’t all of his past “pearls of wisdom” concerning ObamaCare and/or US healthcare policy.  A couple of more have surfaced.

What does he say in these new “nuggets”? Well, let’s see. In one, he says that the Massachusetts health care system he helped design was a scam from day one and only succeeded because Massachusetts conned the Federal government into paying a big chunk of the cost.  Here’s the “money quote” (pun intentional; material in italics added for clarity):

“The dirty secret in Massachusetts is the feds paid for our bill, okay?” he [Gruber] said. “In Massachusetts we had a very powerful senator you may know named Ted Kennedy. . . . Ted Kennedy and smart people in Massachusetts had basically figured out a way to sort of rip off the feds for about 400 million dollars a year.”

In another, he openly mocks a critic of single-payer, government-funded healthcare systems, comparing the critic to an adolescent child.   Nice.  And very indicative of where Gruber lies (second intentional pun) politically.

Ya know, Gruber sounds to me like your sterotypical arrogant ivory-tower pr!ck who’s never really had much to do with the real world.  If I didn’t know better, I’d swear he was a professor at some college in New England who had never really held a job outside academia.  Well, except for those hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars he’s been getting over the past few years for speaking in favor of, performing analysis concerning, and executing various other consulting tasks promoting ObamaCare.

Ya know, to me it almost looks as if he might just have a conflict of interest in that last, or an ethical problem vis-à-vis MIT policies.  But what do I know?

  • Remembering Ivy Mike

Sixty-two years and two weeks ago, the world saw the demonstration of something completely new. It was a thing both awe-inspiring and terrifying.

On 1 November 1952 – at 0714:59.4 (+/- 0.2 sec) Marshall Islands Time Zone, or 1414:59.4 (+/- 0.2 sec) the previous day on the US East Coast – the world’s first staged (Ulam-Teller design) thermonuclear device was detonated.  The nuclear test series during which that test occurred was called Operation Ivy; it occurred at Enewetak Atoll, Marshall Islands.  The test itself was called Ivy Mike; it occurred on Elugelab Island.

The test was successful.  And it ushered in the height of the Cold War nuclear competition between the US and USSR that – one that nearly culminated in disaster during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

The event is today largely forgotten.  It shouldn’t be.  The destructive power of the Ivy Mike device – which at approximately 10.4 megatons was the third- fourth-most-powerful US nuclear device ever detonated, and still ranks today as one of the largest man-made explosions in history – is something we should remember.

A few facts about the test:

    • The Ivy Mike test had an explosive yield equivalent to approximately 10.4 megatons – that is, 10,400,000 tons of TNT.  For comparison, the nuclear weapon that destroyed Hiroshima had an estimated yield of between 13 and 18 kilotons – or between 575 and 800 times smaller.
    • The Ivy Mike fireball was estimated to be approximately three and 1/4 miles in diameter. (Some sources estimate the fireball’s maximum extent at slightly more than 4 miles in diameter.)  In comparison, the fireball created the Hiroshima weapon was somewhat less than 1/4 mile in diameter.
    • The nearby island of Engebi – three miles away from ground zero for Ivy Mike, and well outside the fireball – was denuded of plant and animal life by the blast.  Only the stumps of vegetation remained.
    • Ground zero for the Ivy Mike test was a building on the island of Elugelab in Eniwetak Atoll. After the test, the island of Elugelab . . . no longer existed.  The entire island (roughly oval, about 1/2 by 1/3 mile) had been vaporized and/or pulverized, then sucked into the explosion’s fireball.  Remaining in its place was a crater over a mile in diameter and over 160 feet deep. Here are before and after aerial photographs:

    Before:

After ( large arrow indicates crater):

    • On the island of Rigili, 14 miles to the south-southeast, vegetation directly in the line-of-sight of the detonation was scorched and wilted on the side facing the explosion.
    • A B-36 orbiting the test site 15 miles away at 40,000 feet altitude heated 93 degrees F virtually instantaneously when the device was detonated.
    • The mushroom cloud created by the Mike device crested at 27 miles altitude. Its stem was 20 miles across at its maximum; the cloud’s cap at maximum extent was 100 miles in diameter.

While the device tested at Ivy Mike was not a deliverable warhead (it used liquid deuterium vice materials stable at room temperature), two years later a device of roughly the same power that was stable at room temperature had been developed.  By early 1955, the US had weaponized devices in the same yield range.  The USSR followed not long afterwards, exploding their first staged thermonuclear device on November 22, 1955.

Militarily, at the time there was at least a modest argument in favor of weapons of this immensely destructive scale.  Delivery systems of the early/mid 1950s were by today’s standards quite crude in terms of accuracy; getting a weapon within even a kilometer or two of a strategic target was not guaranteed.  So weapons that would destroy a strategic target even if they “missed” by a mile or more at least arguably made some amount of military sense.

Unfortunately, those strategic targets were often in or near cities – or were often the cities themselves.  We should thus thank God weapons of this type were never used.  Had they ever been employed, the death toll could literally have been in the tens or hundreds of millions had a significant number been employed.  Even a single such weapon used on a large city could have killed literally millions.

Still, as terrible as they could have been . . . they were also truly awe-inspiring things.  And we would do well to remember them – if for no other reason to remind ourselves just how bad total war could be.

  • Yer Friday Afternoon Funny: Kinda Glad This Guy Wasn’t Ours

The following was related to me second-hand. It comes, however, from someone who I trust – and who claims to have heard it personally from one of the US soldiers involved.  I believe it to be true, but cannot swear to that as fact.

But if it’s not true . . . it should be. (smile)

I am not an aviator, so I apologize any minor procedural or equipment-related errors in the account which follows.

    . . .

Friendly Activity at Time of Incident:  routine air recon patrol vic Kuwait-Iraq border during DESERT SHIELD

    SALUTE Report

Size:  one (1) enemy soldier, one (1) other

Activity (Enemy):   well, that’s kinda . . . complicated. See below.

    Location:   vic Saudi-Kuwaiti border

    Unit:  unknown

Time:  sometime during hours of darkness

Equipment (enemy):  mil uniform, some personal gear

As for “enemy activity” . . . well, the incident was, as noted above, observed during a routine recon patrol by the crew of a US Army helicopter.  The cockpit conversation – presumably over the aircraft’s intercom system – probably went something like this (the names “Bill” and “Jack” used below are intentionally fictitious):

COPILOT: “What the . . . damn. Bill, check this out. You ain’t gonna believe this sh!t.”

    PILOT: “What, Jack?”

COPILOT: “Check out the enemy troop over there.”

    PILOT: “Where?”

COPILOT: “Approx 11 o’clock, top of the second line of dunes.”

    PILOT: “Roger . . . . OK, got it.  Wait, what the . . . oh, Jesus H. Christ!

The two had observed an Iraqi soldier who was outside the enemy’s perimeter. The Iraqi soldier apparently was unaware he was being observed.

But the guy they observed probably wasn’t on sentry or patrol duty – because the guy also wasn’t alone. Let’s just say the Iraqi soldier they observed using their NVG was at the time thoroughly enjoying himself with some (apparently) female company.

Problem was, that female company was from the species ovis aries.

To the pilot and copilot’s credit, they did manage to control their laughter (and/or revulsion) well enough to keep from crashing. The remainder of the mission was reportedly uneventful, and they returned to base at end of mission.

No word on whether the Iraqi soldier and his “friend” did likewise. (smile)

  • Ever Wonder What Those Who Wrote the ObamaCare Law REALLY Think About Us?

Well, I’ll let one of them tell you. The clips below are from a guy named Jonathan Gruber – one of the law’s architects, and an economics professor at MIT.

He further states his belief that American voters are stupid here (it’s at around 31:00 of an hour-long video – sorry, I can’t find a shorter clip).

And, finally – we have this:

Yep. According to one of its authors, ObamaCare was crafted the way it was because its authors thought “the American people are too stupid to understand the difference”.   That explains a lot.

Oh, and Gruber now says he “regrets” calling the American people “stupid”. Yeah? Well, I have one thing to say to that: “Bullsh!t.”   He doesn’t regret saying that at all.

What he regrets is getting caught on video telling someone his true opinion. Because it’s on video, he can’t now deny what he actually said or how he actually feels about his fellow citizens.  He regrets being exposed as a Nanny-state Marxist who feels his fellow citizens are too stupid to take care of themselves.  And he also undoubtedly regrets the fact that former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi – who repeatedly cited his work by-name during the prelude to that middle-of-the-night, “we have to pass it to find out what’s in it” rush to enact ObamaCare – now denies knowing who he is.

You probably only heard about this guy’s statements recently, if you’ve heard about him at all. That’s because it wasn’t the media that originally found his remarks about the US public. Hell, given the prolonged attachment of the media’s collective lips to the POTUS’s butt during past few years I’d guess they’d have buried it anyway.  And the media is still keeping this mostly quiet today.

So, who broke the story?  Turns out it was an investment broker who couldn’t keep his health plan during the initial ObamaCare rollout.  He got p!ssed at being baldfaced lied to, and started looking into the background and past public statements of those who wrote the ObamaCare law. See the first link below for details.

So, we have a monumentally stupid law – which was written the way it was because the people writing it thought American voters were too stupid to notice.  And now they’ve got their butts in a sling because the American voters DID notice – and don’t like being played for fools.  The irony there is simply stunning.  You couldn’t make this sh!t up if you tried.

Some of these video clips of Gruber have had a way of disappearing from university and/or other public sources (imagine that). So in case that happens again, below are links to some of the original news sources on the matter.

  • About Those Terrorists Who “Didn’t” Sneak Across the Southwest Border . . .

Remember those allegations made by Rep. Duncan Hunter about terrorists coming across the US Southwestern border?  You know, those allegations that the current       group of less-than-truthful persons of irregular parentage running things in DC     Administration claimed – in the words of DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson – were “categorically false”?

Well, guess what?  It turns out those claims weren’t actually false at all.  Are you surprised the Administration “got it wrong” – again?  And apparently baldfaced lied about the matter?

Nah, me either.  I’ve already had to get rid of several pair of trousers because they keep p!ssing on my leg and telling me it’s rain.

While not members of ISIS, the 4 individuals in question were Turkish.  And

The men initially claimed to be members of the Revolutionary People’s Liberation Party/Front, known by the acronym DHKP/C. The group is a Marxist insurgency that claimed credit for a 2013 suicide bomb attack on the U.S. embassy in Ankara, Turkey’s capital, last year.

But U.S. counterterrorism officials said the men were more likely members of the PKK, or Kurdistan Workers’ Party, which has been battling for Kurdish rights within Turkey for decades, though recently PKK and Turkish leaders have tried to broker a political agreement.

Both the PKK and DHKP/C are listed by the State Department as terrorist groups.  Jessica Vaughan, policy studies director at the Center for Immigration Studies, said the fact that avowed members of terrorist groups got into the U.S. shows it’s possible to sneak across a porous border.

So, they’re not ISIS/ISIL terrorists – they’re simply other terrorists.  They only claimed to be members of a group of Marxists that have conducted suicide bomber attacks on a US Embassy, and which is recognized as a terrorist group by the State Department.

But they’re not ISIS/ISIL.  So I guess to this      group of clueless idiots      Administration that means, “No problem; it’s all good.”

The four men in question apparently paid a smuggler network $8,000 each to be smuggled into the US.  I’m guessing they weren’t the first to do that.  And I’m also guessing the lies we heard here about them not being terrorists aren’t the only lies we’re going to hear along those lines from this Administration, either.

The Washington Times had a fairly good article the other day on the subject; the quote above is from that article.  It’s worth reading.
