Today’s Valor Friday honors Maurice “Footsie” Britt, USA, and chronicles his acts of heroism in WWII, from North Africa, to Sicily and finally Italy. Footsie survived the war, and like many quiet heroes, he continued to serve through elected office and Presidential appointment. Here’s his story, as sent to me by one who wishes to remain anonymous.

Maurice is not a name one associates with fierceness, and the nickname “Footsie” conjures a soft, playful image, not a rugged one. But Maurice “Footsie” Britt was both fierce and rugged, a man the enemy repeatedly tried to kill but who denied them again and again.

“Footsie” Britt was a handsome man who stood 6’4” and weighed more than 200 lbs. In high school, he was a gifted student and a gifted athlete who excelled at basketball and football. He was valedictorian of his class and attended the University of Arkansas on a dual scholarship. Despite the demands of studies and sports, he joined the ROTC. He was commissioned an officer upon graduation and was drafted by the Detroit Lions to play football. The Army granted him a temporary deferment to play ball and in 1941, at age 22, he started in nine of the Lions’ 11 games. Then came Pearl Harbor and the abrupt end to Britt’s deferment and football career.

Britt was an infantry officer whose first combat experience came in North Africa in late 1942, followed by action in Italy at Sicily and Salerno in 1943. In a place called Acerno, he was wounded the first of four times during the war. He also prevailed against an enemy machine gun and, for that action, was awarded the Silver Star. At Sicily, his company was stopped by a well concealed enemy machine gun. The infantrymen knew it was there but could not see it. Britt devised a simple plan. He rose and began doing jumping jacks to draw enemy fire. It worked. The enemy fired, revealing itself, and was destroyed, but not before a round tore a chunk from Britt’s arm. For that, Britt received the Distinguished Service Cross but lost the possibility of returning to pro football after the war. The place where Britt did his famous cals was immediately renamed “Britt’s Junction” and one can easily imagine the account of Britt’s impromptu PT being told and retold among the grunts! Such is the stuff of legend.

In Italy, Britt also received a Bronze Star w/ V Device and was promoted to captain in the field. Then came 10 November 1943, the account of which follows below in his Medal of Honor citation.

After the war, “Footsie” returned to the University of Arkansas where he studied law but withdrew to pursue a business career. In 1966, he was elected lieutenant governor of Arkansas and was later appointed by President Nixon to the Small Business Administration. He died in 1995 at the age of 76.

War Department, General Orders No. 23 (March 24, 1944)
    CITATION:
The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Captain (Infantry) Maurice Lee “Footsie” Britt, United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving with Company L, 3d Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division. Disdaining enemy hand grenades and close-range machine pistol, machinegun, and rifle fire, Lieutenant Britt inspired and led a handful of his men in repelling a bitter counterattack by approximately 100 Germans against his company positions north of Mignano, Italy, the morning of 10 November 1943. During the intense fire fight, Lieutenant Britt’s canteen and field glasses were shattered; a bullet pierced his side; his chest, face, and hands were covered with grenade wounds. Despite his wounds, for which he refused to accept medical attention until ordered to do so by his battalion commander following the battle, he personally killed five and wounded an unknown number of Germans, wiped out one enemy machinegun crew, fired five clips of carbine and an undetermined amount of Ml rifle ammunition, and threw 32 fragmentation grenades. His bold, aggressive actions, utterly disregarding superior enemy numbers, resulted in capture of four Germans, two of them wounded, and enabled several captured Americans to escape. Lieutenant Britt’s undaunted courage and prowess in arms were largely responsible for repulsing a German counterattack which, if successful, would have isolated his battalion and destroyed his company.

Hand Salute. Ready, Two! Fair wind and following seas, Captain.

Today’s Valor Friday honors Robert Charles Burke, USMC, who served with distinction in Viet Nam. Unfortunately, he did not survive the conflict. This is his story, as forwarded to me by one who wishes to remain anonymous.

Some 18-year olds are seniors in high school. Others are college freshmen. Still others work a job or do nothing of value at all. When Robert Charles Burke was 17 and still in high school, he joined the USMC Reserve. A couple of months later, he enlisted in the Marines. He was trained as a mechanic but when he was sent to Vietnam in February 1968, he dropped his wrenches and picked up an M60 with I Company, 3rd Battalion, 27th Marines, 1st Marine Division (Reinforced). After three months in country, Burke’s company was leading a column of the 3/27 when it was ambushed by a strongly entrenched PAVN force near the hamlet of Le Nam on Go Noi Island. The furious and accurate enemy fire resulted in 88 casualties for I Company, including 20 KIA. Burke’s response to the ambush was to aggressively attack, using his M60 first and, when that jammed, a rifle and grenades taken from a casualty, and then back to his M60, now cleared. The bold, aggressive, and selfless action saved many of his fellow Marines and, in exchange, cost him his life.

Robert C. Burke of Monticello, Illinois was the youngest recipient of the Medal of Honor during the Vietnam war. A six-acre park bears his name in his home town. Forever 18. Forever a Marine. Here is the official account of his valor, memorialized on the citation and immortalized in the valorous history of the US military and the United States Marine Corps:

    Citation:
The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pride in presenting the Medal of Honor (Posthumously) to Private First Class Robert Charles Burke (MCSN: 2359360), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty as a machine gunner with Company I, Third Battalion, Twenty-Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Reinforced), Fleet Marine Force, in action at Le Nam (1), Go Nai Island, southern Quang Nam Province, Republic of Vietnam on 17 May 1968. While on Operation ALLEN BROOK, Company I was approaching a dry river bed with a heavily wooded tree line that borders the hamlet of Le Nam (1), when they suddenly came under intense mortar, rocket propelled grenades, automatic weapons and small-arms fire from a large, well concealed enemy force which halted the company’s advance and wounded several Marines. Realizing that key points of resistance had to be eliminated to allow the units to advance and casualties to be evacuated, Private First Class Burke, without hesitation, seized his machinegun and launched a series of one man assaults against the fortified emplacements. As he aggressively maneuvered to the edge of the steep river bank, he delivered accurate suppressive fire upon several enemy bunkers, which enabled his comrades to advance and move the wounded Marines to positions of relative safety. As he continued his combative actions, he located an opposing automatic weapons emplacement and poured intense fire into the position, killing three North Vietnamese soldiers as they attempted to flee. Private First Class Burke then fearlessly moved from one position to another, quelling the hostile fire until his weapon malfunctioned. Obtaining a casualty’s rifle and hand grenades, he advanced further into the midst of the enemy fire in an assault against another pocket of resistance, killing two more of the enemy. Observing that a fellow Marine had cleared his malfunctioning machinegun he grasped his weapon and moved into a dangerously exposed area and saturated the hostile tree line until he fell mortally wounded. Private First Class Burke’s gallant actions upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.

Hand Salute. Ready, Two! Fair winds and following seas, Marine.

Mugger targets female UFC fighter, ends up in the hospital

    By Elizabeth Llorente
When a would-be thief saw 26-year-old Polyana Viana waiting for a taxi on Saturday outside her Rio de Janeiro apartment, he apparently concluded she was easy prey.

He asked her what time it was, she reportedly said, before trying to bully her into giving him her cellphone. He also told her he had a gun.

She quickly sized up the situation – it’s second nature for the UFC straw-weight, who has won 10 of her 12 professional fights.

“He was really close to me. So I thought, ‘If it’s a gun, he won’t have time to draw it,’” she told MMAJunkie.com in an interview. “So I stood up. I threw two punches and a kick. He fell, then I caught him in a rear-naked choke. Then I sat him down in the same place we were before and said, ‘Now we’ll wait for the police.’”

Stolen car suspect held at gunpoint until police arrive

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Four people scrambled from a stolen SUV Saturday night in the SouthPark neighborhood.

Two were arrested, including one who was held at gunpoint until police arrived.

Police identified the two arrested suspects as Taylor Roseborough and Tyrell White.

“I immediately pulled my firearm and told him to get down on the ground,” Stewart McKibben said.

McKibben said one of the suspects ran through a wooded area and onto his property while running from officers.

“(My) mind is racing 100 mph trying to figure out what to do next,” McKibben said. “He came from my neighbor’s backyard, jumped over their fence, came through my gate and was coming up my steps. At the first landing is where I approached him and stopped him.”

The incident started after a blue Ford Explorer was stolen from Oakbrook Drive and officers spotted the stolen vehicle around 8 p.m.

Police say they attempted to pull over the SUV, but the driver and three passengers jumped out at a dead end on Moncure Drive.

Man shot to death by woman, 52, after violating protection order

    By: Alice Yin
A man breaching an order of protection was killed inside a hallway late Saturday by an armed 52-year-old woman who turned a gun on him in the South Side Englewood neighborhood.

At 11:44 p.m., the 52-year-old was notified that the security alarm at her home in the 1400 block of West 71st Street went off, according to Chicago police. She opened her front door on the second floor to investigate and encountered a 22-year-old man who had an active order of protection forbidding him to go near that address.

After an argument, she shot him in the left shoulder, police said. He was pronounced dead at University of Chicago Medical Center at 12:10 a.m. Sunday.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office identified him as Daniel L. Erskin, who lived in the same neighborhood.

Erskin was taken into custody April 13 under allegations of domestic battery, criminal sexual abuse of an underage victim, assault, home invasion, burglary, theft and criminal damages to property, Chicago police arrest records show. Two months earlier, he was also arrested on domestic battery charges.

  • Illegals a law unto themselves in California cop-killing case

illegal alien familyThe family of Gustavo Perez Arriaga, a 32-year-old illegal alien, helped him evade police and attempted to help smuggle him across the United States-Mexico border after he allegedly murdered 33-year-old Newman, California, police officer Ronil Singh, federal documents allege.

Here’s a compound article from our very own Poetrooper. The first part is an American Thinker article by Monica Showalter, and she refers to a Breitbart article, and then continues with her own. Without further ado:

As the killing of a Newman, Calif. police officer demonstrates, illegal immigration is hardly a single crime.

    Breitbart News Reports
    By: John Binder

The family of Gustavo Perez Arriaga, a 32-year-old illegal alien, helped him evade police and attempted to help smuggle him across the United States-Mexico border after he allegedly murdered 33-year-old Newman, California, police officer Ronil Singh, federal documents allege.

The day after Christmas, Singh pulled Arriaga over on suspicion of drunk driving. That’s when police say the illegal alien shot Singh. Over his police radio, Singh called out “shots fired,” and as police arrived at the scene of the traffic stop, they found the officer with a gunshot wound.

Singh was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died, leaving behind his wife Anamika and their newborn five-month-old son.

The Breitbart report, citing police sources, shows that seven family members of this alleged shooter were right there at the ready to help him evade any responsibility for his actions, and there was a human-smuggler there to help, too. It seemed to happen like clockwork. One might have helped him steal the gun from Washington State and apparently lied to the cops about it; another allegedly covered up a bullet hole in Arriaga’s pickup that was left there after the murder; one packed three changes of clothing for the alleged cop-killer so as to escape in comfort; one drove him to a relative’s house in Stockton so as to wait the matter out (apparently, they were thrown out by some relatives who wanted no truck with the law, though I don’t see any evidence they called the cops); one disposed of the murder weapon; one transported the alleged cop-killer elsewhere; one tricked a relative into a loan for the getaway, via the human-smuggler who got the whole group into the U.S. in the first place; one bought him a new cell phone; one brought a new change of clothes; and someone wired five hundred bucks for the escape.

All this in the course of Arriaga’s two days on the run. Supposedly, he’s a gang member, but the evidence here suggests that his gang is his family. And surprise, surprise: This group that acted with such military precision is all here illegally.

These are the people the media idolizes with sob stories in their bid to ensure open borders. These are the people House speaker Nancy Pelosi waxes poetic about regarding their “souls.” These are the people leftist judges refuse to sentence on account of the potential for their being deported afterward, creating one set of laws for Americans and another for foreigners. These are the people Democrats would like to have citizenship with voting rights, as well as hand out free health care to in California itself.

Poe had some rhetorical questions in his e-mail about prison, deportation, and the family’s children. My short answer is, if the parents are deported, easy. Take them with, and goodbye. If the parents are convicted they go to jail, and the kids can either go live with legal relatives on this side of the border, if any, or sent to their country of origin and let the authorities there sort it out.

And of course it’s Trump’s fault.

  • SECNAV Names Future Destroyer In Honor Of Navy Veteran, Vietnam War POW

    Arleigh BurkeArleigh Burke DDG

(NAVY.MIL 04 JAN 19) … Secretary of the Navy Public Affairs

WASHINGTON — Secretary of the Navy Richard V. Spencer named a future Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer in honor of U.S. Navy Vietnam veteran, Navy Cross recipient, and former U.S. Senator from Alabama, Admiral Jeremiah Denton.
“Admiral Denton’s legacy is an inspiration to all who wear our nation’s uniform,” said Secretary of the Navy Richard V. Spencer. “His heroic actions during a defining period in our history have left an indelible mark on our Navy and Marine Corps team and our nation. His service is a shining example for our Sailors and Marines and this ship will continue his legacy for decades to come.”
In 1947, Denton graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and served as a test pilot, flight instructor, and squadron leader, and developed operational tactics still in use, such as the Haystack Concept, which calls for the dispersing of carrier fleets to make it more difficult for the enemy to find the fleets on RADAR.
On July 18, 1965, Denton was shot down over North Vietnam and spent nearly eight years as a POW, almost half in isolation. During an interview with a Japanese media outlet, Denton used Morse code to blink “torture,” confirming that American POWs were being tortured. He suffered severe harassment, intimidation and ruthless treatment, yet he refused to provide military information or be used by the enemy for propaganda purposes.
In recognition of his extraordinary heroism while a prisoner-of-war, he was awarded the Navy Cross. Denton was released from captivity in 1973, retired from the Navy in 1977 and in 1980 was elected to the U.S. Senate where he represented Alabama.
Arleigh Burke-class destroyers conduct a variety of operations from peacetime presence and crisis response to sea control and power projection. The future USS Jeremiah Denton (DDG 129) will be capable of fighting air, surface and subsurface battles simultaneously, and will contain a combination of offensive and defensive weapon systems designed to support maritime warfare, including integrated air and missile defense and vertical launch capabilities.
The ship will be constructed at Huntington Ingalls Industries’ Ingalls shipbuilding division in Pascagoula, Miss.. The ship will be 509 feet long, have a beam length of 59 feet and be capable of operating at speeds in excess of 30 knots.

Damn it’s good to have adults at the helm again. USS Jeremiah Denton, DDG 129, will bring 6,900 tons of kick-ass to the fleet.

Update: International Child Porn Ringleader Beaten to Death in Prison

    By: Katherine Rodriguez
A man who ran an international child porn ring was beaten to death in prison this week, but one of his victims predicted his fate long before his demise.

A judge sentenced Christian Maire, a married father-of-two from upstate New York, to 40 years in federal prison in December for running an online operation where he and eight of his accomplices posed as teenage boys on dating sites trying to convince young girls to perform sex acts via their webcams.

The men even tried to convince their victims to cut themselves while in front of their webcams.

But at least one of Maire’s victims did not seem surprised that Maire would suffer this fate. One female victim, who is now 20-years-old, predicted at Maire’s December 2018 sentencing he would get beaten up in prison.

“He’s gonna get the hell beat out of him,” the now-20-year-old victim said at the time.

The incident began around 8:25 p.m. Smith and Almand were spotted shoplifting at the store by a security guard, the Sheriff’s Office said.

“When they left, (the guard) confronted them in the parking lot. There was an altercation where the suspect pulled a knife out,” Lt. Andrew Scott said.

Smith then tried to stab the security guard, Scott said.

“The altercation escalated at that point and the victim was able to disarm the (Smith) and they began wrestling on the ground,” Scott said.

The knife fell to the ground, feet away from them, near where Almand was standing nearby.
