    Friday morning feel good stories

    From Las Vegas, Nevada;

    A central valley homeowner shot and killed an intruder Wednesday morning, Las Vegas police said.

    Police were called at 11 a.m. to the 2800 block of Hermosa Street, near East Sahara Avenue and Maryland Parkway, Metropolitan Police Department spokesman Larry Hadfield said.

    From Santa Cruz County, California;

    The woman, identified as 32-year-old Samantha Vetter, broke into a home in Ben Lomond on Monday afternoon and stole multiple firearms, investigators said, according to KSBW.
    When deputies arrived, Vetter sped away in a stolen Lexus, abandoning her pet dog, the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office said.

    Later that day, another deputy spotted the Lexus in downtown Boulder Creek, and authorities again gave chase.
    “The deputy continued to pursue the woman until he lost sight of her,” the sheriff’s news release said.
    Officials searched for the vehicle and waited at nearby intersections, but didn’t catch a glimpse of it.
    That is, until evening.
    That’s when residents on Branciforte Drive in the Santa Cruz area reported a silver Lexus blocking a driveway, police said.
    A woman was walking door to door asking residents to not call the police. She was also asking for gas, officials said.
    When police arrived in the neighborhood, they found a 45-year-old man named Chad Tartala by the Lexus, according to the release. He told authorities that the woman he was with was up the driveway looking for gasoline.
    Inside the Lexus, officials found stolen property from the earlier burglary, police said.
    Meanwhile, officials made a reverse 911 call to residents, asking them to shelter in place “because of the public safety threat Samantha represented,” the news release said.
    Other neighbors began calling 911 to report that they saw a woman trying to get into parked cars in the area.
    One of the residents who received the reverse 911 call saw Vetter climb over his driveway’s fence and walk toward his house, police said.
    The man armed himself with a handgun and shouted at Vetter to stop, but “she continued toward him, challenging him to shoot her,” according to the news release.
    “Finally, fearing for his and his family’s safety, the resident fired a single warning shot into the soft dirt in front of his porch,” the news release said.
    Vetter then followed the resident’s commands to lay flat on the ground, and deputies arrived and arrested her.
    Vetter, who is homeless and from the San Lorenzo Valley, was arrested on suspicion of burglary, vehicle theft, evading a peace officer, carrying a loaded firearm, being a felon in possession of a firearm and violating probation, the Santa Cruz Sentinel reported.
    Tartala, the man who was with Vetter, was arrested on suspicion of narcotics and stolen property charges, police said.

    From Toledo, Ohio;

    Police tell the Toledo Blade the suspected domestic incident occurred around noon. The neighbor reportedly saw the suspect, Bernard Neyland, 59, of Toledo, attacking the victim with an ax in a pickup truck.

    According to WTVG Channel 13, police say Benjamin Hand, 29, came out of his home and shot Neyland.

    “I heard this lady screaming,” an unidentified neighbor tells WTVG. “She was saying, ‘Help me! He’s killing me! He’s killing me!’”

    Neyland was taken to University of Toledo Medical Center but died of his wounds, the Blade reports.

    From Chicago, Illinois;

    [Kinta] Harris wrote a robbery note at a nearby library, then walked into the MB Financial Bank branch about 9 a.m. at 3030 E. 92nd St., went straight to a teller and slid the note on the counter, the complaint said.
    When the teller started to put cash into his bag, Harris told them to hurry before he hurt someone, and motioned to his hip to suggest he had a gun, according to the complaint.
    When he was walking out, a bank security guard who had found Harris to be suspicious confronted him and told him he couldn’t leave with the money, the complaint said.

    Harris didn’t give him the money and instead ran off, according to the complaint. The guard chased after him and fired a single shot, striking Harris in the leg. Harris kept running.
    Chicago police officers later saw a man who matched Harris’ description near 90th Street and Escanaba, the complaint said.
    They arrested Harris, and took him to the University of Chicago Medical Center for treatment.
    While in custody, he admitted to the robbery and confirmed he was the man wearing a wig, reading glasses and a long black coat in surveillance pictures, the complaint said. He told officers he had been fired from his job in October and needed money to pay his bills, including parking tickets.

    From Wisner, Nebraska;

    A Wisner family wakes up to an intruder and quickly take action.
    Police say, on the 24th of May, Jaben Sateren broke into a home in Cuming County.

    The break-in was anything, but typical.

    That’s because he was not wearing any clothes.

    The homeowner, Brook Anderson, grabbed his gun and shot the intruder in the leg twice and held him at gunpoint until officers arrived.

    USS Hue City saving the world

    According to the Navy Times, USS Hue City (CG-66), a Ticonderoga class-guided-missile cruiser, responded to a Coast Guard request for help off the coast of Georgia to rescue the crew of a 42-foot fishing vessel Barbara Lynn;

    It only took the cruiser about 20 minutes to arrive at the vessel’s last reported position.

    “The crew of the USS Hue City…when within approximately 1 mile of the last known position of the distress, reported seeing orange flares, flashing lights and located a raft with three fishermen aboard surrounded by debris,” the Coast Guard release said.

    Hué City’s rescue swimmer, Sonar Technician (Surface) 3rd Class Nathan Andrade, a native of Stockton, California, swam to the life raft to assist as Hue City maneuvered nearby.

    Andrade then harnessed each fisherman, while the crew lifted the survivors on board using litters.

    The rescue took just two hours to complete and there were no reported injuries as a result.

    Levi Tillemann pepper-sprays himself for gun control

    Mick and Kevin sends us a link to Fox News which reports that Levi Tillemann, a candidate for Congress in Maryland made the great sacrifice, spraying himself with pepper-spray to promote gun control;

    “Pepper spray doesn’t cost much and it can be safely stored in a break glass in case of emergency cabinet. But it’s powerful and won’t accidentally kill a kid,” he continued. “Trust me, this will stop anybody in their tracks.”

    The Democrat then proceeded to close his eyes and began spraying the pepper spray in his face. He’s later seen trying to wash off his face by dunking his head into water and spraying himself with a hose. “It’s incredibly painful, now I can’t see anything,” he said. “Wow, that’s intense.”

    Tillemann, a former Department of Energy official during the presidency of Barack Obama, made gun control the key issue of his campaign, doubling-down on his website that pepper spray should be “be made widely available as quickly as possible” for teachers and school officials to combat potential school shooters.

    “The time has come to move beyond apologies and half measures and fight for real solutions to gun violence in our community. Help us win this fight,” he said.

    Maybe he should shoot himself in the head with a scary black rifle so we can make a comparison in the effects. According to the article, it appears that his antics won’t secure his place in the election – his party is backing another candidate.

    Someone sent us the above forged CAC card which accomapanied several emails and the following photos. It appears that the young lady in the photo is a real soldier, that her last name is Arnett and she’s a Private First Class;

    I’ve been unable to find her with a reverse image search. But she probably ought to know that someone has snagged her photos and they’re using them in a scam. I left the email in so you can get a part of that $4 million;

  • Jury recommends death penalty for Andrew Urdiales, ex-Marine

    Jury recommends death penalty for Andrew Urdiales, ex-Marine

    An Orange County, California jury recommended the death penalty for 53-year-old Andrew Urdiales, a serial killer while he was in the Marine Corps in Southern California.

    In 1986, Urdiales drove from Camp Pendleton to Saddleback College in Mission Viejo and approached 23-year-old Robbin Brandley at a parking lot, OCDA said. He stabbed her 41 times with a hunting knife and fled.

    In 1988, Urdiales picked up 29-year-old Julie McGhee in Indian Wells and drove to a remote area in Cathedral City, according to officials. He shot her in the head after having sex with her. Urdiales left her body, took some of her belongings and fled, OCDA said.

    Less than three months later, Urdiales picked up 31-year-old Mary Ann Wells in San Diego, gave her money and drove her into an alley, officials said. After having sex with her, Urdiales shot her in the head and took back the cash he gave her.

    In 1989, Urdiales picked up 18-year-old Tammie Erwin and drove to a secluded area in Palm Springs, where he had sex with her, according to OCDA. He used the same gun to kill McGhee and Wells to shoot Erwin in the head and hip, officials added. He then dismantled the weapon and disposed of the parts separately.

    Three years later, Urdiales drove to a bus stop and offered Jennifer Asbenson a ride to work in Palm Springs, OCDA said. The next day, he “lured” her into his car, took her somewhere isolated in the Palm Springs desert and beat and sexually assaulted her. He locked her into the trunk of his vehicle, but she was able to escape.

    Urdiales was sentenced to death in Illinois in 2011, but the State abolished the death penalty and his sentence was commuted to life without parole…then California extradited him for their own trial.

    Yeah, Charles Manson was sentenced to death in California, too.

    US Army 243rd Birthday

    WASHINGTON (Army News Service, June 5, 2014) — When the American Revolutionary War broke out in 1775, the original 13 colonies did not have a shared army, but instead, a collection of independent colonial militias.
    The first battles of that war were fought April 19, 1775, in Middlesex County, Mass., by patriots of the Massachusetts militia. They were the Battles of Lexington and Concord, the first hostilities between the colonies and Great Britain.
    Following the Battles of Lexington and Concord, and as British troops moved back across Massachusetts toward Boston, colonial militia from around New England began massing around that city. Within days, thousands of militia members under the leadership of Artemas Ward of Massachusetts had Boston under siege.
    By May 10, just weeks after hostilities began in Massachusetts, the Second Continental Congress convened in Philadelphia. On the agenda: creating a common army to defend the colonies.
    A month later, on June 14, the Congress approved the creation of that army, the Continental Army. The new force was made of those militiamen already gathered outside Boston, some 22,000 of them, plus those in New York, about 5,000.
    The following day, the 15th, the Congress named Virginian George Washington as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army, and named Ward his second in command the following day.
    The Congress also resolved to form a committee “to bring in a draft of rules and regulations for the government of the Army,” and voted $2 million to support the forces around Boston, and those in New York City.
    Congress authorized the formation of 10 companies of expert riflemen from Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia, which were directed to march to Boston to support the New England militia. These were the first troops Congress agreed to pay from its own funds, and the units later became the 1st Continental Regiment.

  • Thursday morning feel good stories

    Thursday morning feel good stories

    An update to the story from New Castle County, Delaware, yesterday;

    Police said 20-year-old Elijah Gordy-Stith entered a home on Flint Hill Road in Arundel around 11:30 p.m. Monday and was then confronted by the homeowner.

    Police said the homeowner had heard a noise and armed himself with a gun. The homeowner fired at Gordy-Stith when he found him hiding in a room.

    “The suspect was known to a family member, but not to the homeowner,” said NCCP Spokesman Master Cpl. Mike Eckerd.

    Gordy-Stith was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and died, police said.

    From Springfield, Illinois;

    The homeowner confronted the burglar when the suspect pointed a gun at them and was able to wrestle it away.

    The suspect is described as a skinny white man with a gray tank top, gray hat, and black gym shorts.

    He was last seen running northwest from the home.

    From Salt Lake City, Utah;

    Raphael Ames, 35…entered the apartment Sunday in a “violent and tumultuous manner,” according to [South Salt Lake Police Sgt. Matthew] Oehler. Ames damaged the apartment’s front door and a bedroom door where he forced entry before being shot by a male guest who was in the bedroom with a woman who lived in the apartment.

    Ames knew the woman, Oehler said, but did not have any connection to the man who shot him.

    The man who shot Ames has been cooperating fully with the police investigation, according to Oehler.

    From Jacksonville, Florida;

    The cashier, LaToya King, spoke with Action News Jax about the incident. She said she didn’t think twice of Hill, who was dressed in bright orange, until she opened her cash register.

    “When I did that, he leaped over the counter and he grabbed my hand and I was like, ‘Sir, what are you doing?’” King said.

    Once the register was open, Hill grabbed the register and ran out of the store, according to a JSO arrest report.

    A witness saw Hill get into a silver Ford SUV, but it did not appear to start, so he got out and ran.

    Police said Hill approached a man who was sitting in the parking lot near Supercuts. Hill asked the man for a ride and the man refused.

    “I turned the ignition off, grabbed my keys, opened the door and boom, there he was,” Scott Reardean said.

    According to the report, Hill put the cash register in the Reardean’s truck bed and pulled a knife, cutting Reardean on the hands and leg, the arrest report said.

    “I was bascially just doing this, trying to get the knife off me, and he’s like, trying to pull me and he yanked my shirt and ripped it all up,” Reardean said.

    Reardean said to Action News Jax that he was able to grab his pistol from his truck and pointed it at Hill, who then ran away toward Starbucks.

    Hill ran to the car of a woman who was in line at the Starbucks drive-through. She told police she rolled down her passenger’s side window to see what he wanted and she said Hill opened her door and got into the car.

    The woman said Hill told her to drive because someone was chasing him. She told police she tried to push him out of the vehicle and he would not get out. According to the report, she was in fear for her life, so she got out of her car to get her Ruger pistol out of her trunk.

    Hill got out of the car and came toward her. She said she pointed her pistol at him and he ran away.

    When police arrived, they found Hill had barricaded himself inside the bathroom at Supercuts, but he came out when officers ordered him to.

  • Taliban continues attacks during cease-fire

    Stars & Stripes reports that the Taliban in Afghanistan is ignoring the cease-fire during the Eid holiday. At least 20 government troops have paid the price with their lives;

    Afghan President Ashraf Ghani announced last week that the eight-day truce would begin Tuesday and stretch through the Eid holiday that marks the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

    The gesture aimed at bringing the Taliban into peace talks halted Afghan, U.S. and coalition offensives against the Taliban, but not against other militants.

    However, the Taliban said it would only maintain a holiday cease-fire with Afghan troops for three days of Eid, and that foreign troops remain targets.

    Over the weekend, attacks killed scores of Afghan troops, and Tuesday saw no ebb in Taliban violence.

    Despite the failure of the cease-fire, Ghani wants to extend it.

    The last Afghan administration wanted a peace option with the Taliban – however the Taliban considers negotiations to be a sign of weakness. The only language that the Taliban understands is MOABs stuck right up their aft-orifice.
