  • Clinton “Jim” Rios; phony Vietnam vet

    Someone who met this fellow, Clinton James Rios, in 2007, says that he told our tipster that he was a POW in Vietnam as well as a special forces soldier. “I questioned him one time about it, after I asked a few questions, he started avoiding me, and I didn’t see him again until his funeral.” He was reminded of the encounter when Mr Rios passed three years ago and the family posted this obituary;

    To begin with, Mr Rios was only a few weeks older than me, and we were too young for the Vietnam War.

    He did serve, though;

    He went to Korea twice and once to Germany, other than than that, he had no deployments. He was a supply clerk, not Special Forces. He was stationed at Fort Campbell, but in those days, there were no special forces units at Campbell. It looks like he had a pretty good career, I don’t know why he had to lie about it – but there you go.

    If you are lying about your service, please come clean with your family so their last memory of you isn’t that you were a liar.

    Tuesday morning feel good stories

    From Santa Ana, California;

    “We got a call of a guy in the parking structure breaking into cars,” [Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna] said. “The calling party stated the suspicious person was checking car doors and was holding a large piece of metal and a wire. During the contact with the suspicious person, an officer-involved shooting occurred. Santa Ana police officers started first aid and were relieved by Orange County Fire Authority paramedics (who) treated the suspect and transported him to Orange County Global Medical Center.”

    The man died at 12:25 a.m. this morning. Authorities withheld his name, pending family notification,

    From Montgomery, Alabama;

    MPD and Fire Medics responded to the 5200 block of Vaughn Road on Sunday, July 1, at about 3:15 p.m. in reference to two subjects shot.

    Upon arrival, MPD located two adult males who had sustained gunshot wounds. Both were transported to a local hospital for treatment; one non-life threatening and one critical but stable.

    MPD’s investigation indicates that the shooting was the result of a robbery of a person during which there was an exchange of gunfire. The circumstances remain under investigation.

    No word on if one of the victims was the suspected robber.

    From Kingman, Arizona;

    KPD arrived to the store around 9:50 p.m. at 3665 E. Andy Devine Ave. and exchanged multiple rounds of gun fire with suspects.

    Demetrius Pitts; July 4th plot foiled in Cleveland

    Mick sends us a link to Fox News which reports that Demetrius Pitts also known as Abdur Raheem Rahfeeq, was arrested by a joint terrorism task force in Cleveland, Ohio for a terrorist plot scheduled to take place on July 4th.

    A man who pledged allegiance to Al Qaeda sought to kill members of the military and conducted reconnaissance in downtown Cleveland for a planned attack on July 4 — but the Independence Day plot was foiled after a months-long investigation, federal officials said Monday.

    Cincinnati.com reports that Pitts intended to park a van with explosives and park along the 4th of July parade route.

    He also told the agent he wanted to kill military personnel and their families and wanted to conduct a future attack in Philadelphia, a place he previously lived, federal officials said.

    Pitts allegedly talked about targeting St. John’s Cathedral and giving remote control cars packed with explosives to the children of members of the military.

    From the Fox News link;

    In the last week, Pitts then went downtown to conduct reconnaissance at Voinovich Bicentennial Park and the Coast Guard station, among other locations, according to officials. He also continued to voice hatred for the military, saying he wanted to “chop off heads and hands.”

    Good luck, coward.

    Cleveland.com has the affidavit from the arresting agent.

  • That “bad day” photo

    That “bad day” photo

    Photo of an enlisted man’s car parked in the designated commander spot and the commander’s car parked so that it blocked the airman’s escape, made the social media circuit this past weekend speculating that an airman was about to have a bad day at Yokoto Air Base, Japan. Stars & Stripes tells the actual story;

    “An airman and his wife had left their car there after having drinks the night prior and didn’t want to be irresponsible,” [Col. Kenneth Moss, commander of the 374th Airlift Wing] explained. “I reassured them I wasn’t mad.”

    Moss did not identify the airman.

    “Parking that way allowed me to thank an airman and his family as well as uncover a problem,” he said.

    It turned out that not only had the couple made a responsible choice in not driving after enjoying a few drinks, the space wasn’t even marked as reserved when they’d parked.

    The wing commander’s parking space is marked in two ways — a curbside label and a removable sign hanging from a frame. But the curbside label had fallen off and the sign was only hung when the commander had official business at the club.

    “The signs were placed after the car was already in the spot so the airman did nothing wrong,” Moss said.

  • Siri Dharma Singh aka Dennis Leroy Franks

    Siri Dharma Singh aka Dennis Leroy Franks

    The real deal SEALs at Military Phonies discovered the above grave marker in their hunt for phony SEALs. They couldn’t find a listing for Siri Dharma Singh in their BUD/S database. A search in genealogical records told them that Siri Dharma Singh had changed his name from Dennis Leroy Franks whose name did appear in the database. So they ordered his FOIA;

    The grave marker says that Franks earned a Silver Star Medal, but there is no record of a Silver Star Medal in his records except the Silver Service Star on his Vietnam Service Medal (which denotes participation in five campaigns of that war).

    Unfortunately, it looks like the name change was necessitated by Franks’ arrest for an attempted rape in 1970.

  • Monday morning feel good stories

    Monday morning feel good stories

    From Everett, Washington;

    The homeowner, who did not want to be identified, woke up and went downstairs. She was horrified to see intruders in her home, but her reaction isn’t what most people would have expected.

    “I look over to the left and there’s these two guys dressed in black,” she said. “I just completely run after them and somehow, I was able to kind of grab a hold and tackle one guy.”

    She told KIRO the intruders seemed shocked and frightened by her brave and brazen behavior.

    One of them was carrying a machete that he had stolen from the homeowner’s garage. He could have attacked her with it, but the woman tackled him anyway.

    “I managed to grab him so hard he dropped everything that he was trying to take with him” she said. “All I wanted to do was grab them, then attack them and take them down. I don’t care about what he has as a weapon.”

    The intruders ran away, but the homeowner continued to chase them down the street, where a female getaway driver was waiting.

    From Orlando, Florida;

    Orlando Police tell News 6 it all started when a passenger waiting at a gas pump tried to rob another man using a nearby pump. The two began shooting at one another, and a third man who was inside the convenience store also started shooting when he returned outside.

    One vehicle fled the area, eluded police and was stopped by police near Willow Bend and Silver Star Roads without incident, according to police.

    One innocent person parked at the site was injured by broken glass when a bullet hit his windshield, police said.

    “I was up here getting gas, pumping up my tire and three guys were at the gas pump and started shooting, 27-year-old Tavaris Davis said. “I ducked, my windshield got hit and then I took off running.”

    Davis, who has a cut on his nose from the broken glass, ran from the area of the shooting into Willow Bend in an attempt to flee to a safe area, but was robbed by three different unknown in a black BMW, police said. Orlando Police Department units conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle matching its description in the area of Silver Star Rd./Ashland Blvd. and all occupants were detained.

    Police said two handguns were discovered inside the vehicle after a search of its interior.

    Felonious charges are pending for the driver and occupants, according to authorities.

    “I’m just glad they got caught,” Davis said. “Today was a bad day but it will get better.”

    Real talk sends a link from Sweetwater, Tennessee;

    15-year-old Alexis Taylor was home alone with her 14-year-old sister Madison when she says a silver car backed up their driveway.

    “Instantly, I knew something was wrong,” said Alexis.

    Their dad, Jeremy, was at work. Alexis called to ask if they should be expecting anyone.

    Jeremy told his daughter that he didn’t know the car or the person in it.

    “You always play the hypothetical game with your children. What if? You run through scenarios. If this happens, this is what you do. You try to plan for them for every scenario and every case but until it actually happens, you just can’t put them in that situation,” said Jeremy.

    From inside the home, Alexis and Madison watched the stranger through the window.

    Alexis says she saw the man load two pressure washers from her family’s carport into his car.

    The girls say he then made his way to their front door.

    “That’s what scared me because I was thinking, well, if he gets in here, what could happen to me, what could happen to my sister,” said Alexis.

    Alexis’ father, over the phone, told her to “get the shotgun.”

    Her father says he stressed the importance of firearm safety with his daughters at a young age.

    “I was confident enough to know that she knew how to use the firearm if needed,” said Jeremy.

    With her 14-year-old sister inside, Alexis says she then snuck around the side of the house, shotgun in hand, to confront the intruder.

    From the corner of the home, she saw the man playing with the handle of the front door.

    The man noticed Alexis out of the corner of his eye and made his way back to his car.

    Once he was in the car, she walked closer to him.

    “During that time my instinct was just telling me, I can’t let him leave with what he had of ours,” she said.

    Alexis said she fired the gun at the man’s car after “he started the ignition and took off.” She claims she hit the car.

    McMinn County Sheriff Joe Guy says Alexis did the right thing.

    “I guess I’m a little old-fashioned and I respect the rights of my citizens to defend themselves and defend their property,” said Sheriff Guy.

  • Michael D. Border; phony Army Beirut veteran

    Michael D. Border; phony Army Beirut veteran

    Our partners at Military Phonies share their work with us on this fellow Michael Deon Border who claims to his friends that he is an Army veteran of the mission to Beirut after the October bombing of the Marine barracks there.

    He claims that he was on patrol with his platoon and they were ambushed and he was the sole survivor. He regained consciousness as the evacuation helicopter lifted off. MP had a conversation by email with someone who was questioning Mr Border – you can click over and read that exchange.

    But, Mr Border did serve in the Army, enlisting in October 1983, only a few months before he claims that he was sent to Beirut. His entire career lasted less than two years and his highest award was the lofty Army Service Ribbon.

    Not even so much as an Overseas Ribbon – denoting service outside of the Continental US.

  • USS Harry S. Truman on patrol for Russian subs

    USS Harry S. Truman on patrol for Russian subs

    DocV sends us a link from USNI which reports that the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman (CVN-75) has left the Mediterranean Sea and entered the North Atlantic on patrol for Russian attack submarines;

    In terms of great power competition, there is growing evidence that Russia continues to push its newest attack submarines to operate the North Atlantic at a pace not seen since the Cold War, Navy leaders have continued to stress publicly.

    “Russian submarines are prowling the Atlantic, testing our defenses, confronting our command of the seas, and preparing the complex underwater battlespace to give them an edge in any future conflict,” current U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa commander Adm. James Foggo wrote in U.S. Naval Institute’s Proceedings in 2016.
    “Not only have Russia’s actions and capabilities increased in alarming and confrontational ways, its national-security policy is aimed at challenging the United States and its NATO allies and partners.”

    The escort fleet includes at least six guided missile destroyers and the German guided missile frigate FGS Hessen.

    [Bryan Clark, a senior fellow at CSBA] said the U.S. [destroyers] are equipped with an effective anti-submarine warfare packages that work well in the Atlantic but aren’t typically deployed there.

    “You have to make a special effort to put them there,” he said.

    USNI claims that the Truman’s mission will last several months.
