Editor’s Note: Monkress needed a bump up to the top. His lawyer is sending threatening letters to our friends and I guess she decided after a phone call with me, that her threats would only be a day’s welcomed distraction. Someone is walking the halls of Congress with Monkress’ DD214 today asking questions. I’ve added some more evidence that Monkress called himself a Navy SEAL, which seems to be their defense these days, that he never said he was a SEAL. So Lori Benton of Ford & Harrison, Attorneys at Law, you know our number.
Someone sent us some information on Phillip Dale Monkress who was outed late last year by POW Network as a phony SEAL, but he’s still rockin’ the lie, so it’s time to call out the pitchfork brigade. Here’s picture of him in his motorcycle club, the US Military Veterans’ Motorcycle Club;
ADDED: It seems the lawyers are trying to make the point that Monkress never called himself a SEAL, but here’s a page from the Brevard Business News which reprints a slide presentation in their publication;

The U.S. Supreme Court allows that to falsely proclaim oneself “U.S. Navy SEAL Team 4” is but a “mere résumé embellishment.”
But as our Nation prepares for the May 27, 2013, day of remembrance for the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces, words from another time might help stay the resolve of those brave hearts that ache at the idea of “mere résumé embellishment.”
When John (Jack) Ogden Carley died in 1962, many paid him tribute — Frank R. Ahlgren, editor of The Memphis Commercial Appeal; Buford Ellington, Governor of Tennessee; John L. McClellan, Arkansas Senator; Lt. Gen. W.K. Wilson, Chief of Engineers; J. Edgar Hoover, Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
For good cause The Commercial Appeal framed Jack as “one of the truly revered figures in southern journalism.” For 39 years he had been a member of their staff and for 22 of those years he was Chief Editorial Writer.
In the first of those 22 years, on June 3, 1940, The Memphis Commercial Appeal wrote of Jack Carley’s words:
“They lie who say that Democracy is decadent and that might shall triumph over right,” Jack Carley, editorial writer for The Commercial Appeal, told several hundred persons gathered yesterday for a memorial service amid the white crosses over soldier dead in National Cemetery.
“Democracy yet remains the best national system devised and this Nation represents the greatest undertaking for democracy which could be conceived,” Mr. Carley added.
As an invocation, the Rev. C.C. Rooney of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, a veteran himself, recited the solemn and sonorous lines of Kipling’s “Recessional,” setting the tone of the occasion and leaving the audience quiet and receptive.

Of our own Soldier, it was written with words under the provisions of AR 600–45, 22 September 1943, as amended:
“… assumed control and working without any of his own staff, with complete disregard for his own personal safety and utter contempt for the enemy, organized all elements with stunning swiftness, cleaned out the opposition and established an effective defense of the area as a base for future operations, resulting in the expedient and successful accomplishment of the mission. … courage and devotion to duty, many times displayed, served as an inspiration to the officers and men under his command, reflect great credit on himself and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the Armed Forces.”
Now, 70 years later, while so many values have changed, our Nation still finds Soldiers willing to “carry on the mission,” and truly proclaim before God, “I am U.S. Navy SEAL Team 4.”

This is a heads up for what I would hope will not become a public issue, and on which I will work to resolve before we get a chance to talk next week. BBN ran this ad in the most recent issue. It features a COPY of our Veterans Conference ad from two years ago, with a footer which says, “To Be Continued…” To us, this is a not so subtle notice that she has more to say on the topic.
Adrianne Roth, the Publisher of BBN, has a history of airing her personal disputes in her newspaper, and due to the position of the ad, I anticipate that she has something negative to say about our speaker from two years ago, Phil Monkress. She has used BBN as a platform to speak about her disagreements with Space Coast Business Magazine and FIT. It always contains some emotion about which the general public probably just scratches its head and wonders what is really going on.
Ms. Roth has always been a friend of the SBDC, and I, together with Vicky, have had open and candid communication for many years.
BACKGROUND:
• Mr. Monkress has been a client of the SBDC and was the keynote speaker at our 2011 Veterans Conference.
• SUBSEQUENT to the 2011 Conference, someone in the public questioned his claim to have been an actual Navy SEAL. He later retracted this claim and has asked for various sponsors of web sites to remove references to it. We complied with his request, but Ms. Roth refused to do so, citing professional reasons.
• The issue has been quiet for over a year until this BBN issue landed on my desk.
ACTION:
• I have left a message with Ms. Roth and have asked her to call me back.
• The Veterans Conference represents about 75% of our Program Income in a given year. My request to her would be simply to leave us out of it as adverse press could jeopardize our reputation and our relationship with our major sponsors, including, Harris and IAP, to name a few.
I appreciate your wisdom and any guidance you might have to offer on this as well as communication with any appropriate departments within BCC which might have a strategic interest.

We circulated our desire to acquire a speaker to the BSBAC Committee of the Chamber in early 2011. The Boeing Company suggested him as a speaker and he submitted his resume and credentials to us. There was explicit conversation prior to going to press about proper syntax when referring to a “Former Navy SEAL” with him and his office. Candidly, we took him at his word.
As I told Mildred in the original email on this topic, AFTER the 2011 Conference, someone had as ax to grind with him and began publishing a blog about his record lacking any credible SEAL documentation. (GOOGLE it!) We questioned him on this and he publicly retracted his claims and asked us to remove referenced to it on our web site and our publications. We complied with this request and have not heard anything from him or anyone else since that time until last week’s BBN, which referenced us obliquely.

Here is the article in today’s BBN.
Our documentation from that period disputes the facts stated in the letter. Sandy and Vicky went to great lengths to clarify the proper method and syntax for publishing the SEAL credentials. Monkress might blame his “office” for that communication, but we are well documented. It irritates Sandy a little bit to be called a liar, but we are big kids and will remain in silent mode on this topic as far as the public is concerned.
