Someone called to tell us about this Aaron Elijah Colyer fellow who looks to be a homeless Marine Corps veteran. He’s set up a Rally tin cup to take up collections for helping veterans, mostly, though, I’m guessing that it’s for helping himself. There are reports of him recently panhandling as a combat veteran with PTSD outside the Oakland A’s game.

On July 24, 2014, I was homeless, a Disabled USMC Veteran with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and I was ticketed by Alameda Police for “Sleeping/Living in a Vehicle”. When did it become illegal to exist? When did it become illegal to be homeless? What else is a person supposed to do?

When I began to do some research I found that it’s not JUST me, there is an epidemic of homelessness in America and according to estimates by the Department Veterans Affairs, 23% of all homeless persons are veterans. That means between 250,000-1,000,000 homeless veterans, many of which are disabled and suffer from PTSD and other mental health issues and do not receive, or are ineligible for, V.A. medical care or services.

Googling around the internet, you can find examples of him calling himself “Rev”, although I can’t find a church with which he is affiliated. Back three years ago, he had attached himself to the Occupy Movement;

Well gues what? The Occupy movement is TOO BIG TO FAIL and we are not going anywhere, in the words of GW Bush, you are either with us or you are against us. You got robbed and so did I and if you dont stand up to these folk then you are accomplices and deserve to be robbed and much more.

He has applied to the VA for benefits, but because he has an Other Than Honorable Conditions discharge, they won’t help. According to the VA he has a number of Captains’ Masts (Article 15s) mostly for misbehaving under the influence. He is, however, getting help from some of the non-profits to fix his homeless problem which have a lower threshold for benefits than the VA. But, I guess the DD214 comes with PTS. I really wish these guys would start blaming their bad behavior on their parents like they used to do, instead of their peacetime service as an aircraft mechanic in Beaufort, South Carolina.

UPDATE: OK, he sends this set of discharge orders from the National Guard. I suspect (from my experience) that he witheld information from the NGs when he enlisted and when they found out about the UOTHC discharge, they asked him to leave and gave him an Honorable Discharge. But we won’t know that unless he sends us a NG-22.

He also claims that his PTS resulted from childhood trauma and that he never claimed that it happened during his service, but he never said that it didn’t either. You decide.

      11. I can tell you how that “honorable discharge” from the TN ARNG came about. They didn’t care enough to go through the ass pain that it is to give an OTH or general to an M-day soldier. As far as they were concerned, it was good bye and good riddance, an the fastest way to do it was to cut you the same discharge that they do for the guys how miss 9 drills. I spent 11 years in the M-day world, and I saw a lot of losers pass across the drill shed floor. And, regardless of just how worthless they were when we booted them before they finished their term of enlistment, they all got “honorable” discharges.

  11. I am confused by his DD-214.

    He has a Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (Section 13), yet zero days of Sea Service in section 12. Also in section 12, he has 6 mos 7 days foreign service. Did he catch the PTSD in Okinawa?

    1. Sea Service Deployment Ribbon is for deployments greater than 90 days from home port. You don’t need to be permanently assigned to the deploying command to earn it. An aircraft mechanic deployed with an aviation squadron to an aircraft carrier would earn this ribbon but accrue no sea time. Days of Sea Service reflect days permanently assigned to type 2 or 4 commands.

      This guy’s real mistake is staying in Oakland. All he needs to do is scrounge up $2.00, grab a BART ride from West Oakland to Embarcadero on the San Francisco side and start collecting his piece of the $280,000,000.00 per year that city spends on the homeless.

    2. VMFA-122 did some European training tours and WESTPAC UDP’s around the time he was in. He likely got the ribbon during one of those events.

      His PTSD may stem from too much beer and sausage in Germany or from discovering the Thai ladyboy he fancied was more than meets the eye.

  13. I get fed up with PTS as an excuse for bad behavior. My civilian job is a paramedic and I often get to pick up drunks who blame their problems on PTS.

    The other day I had Air Force intelligence analysis E4 who was 48 years old, Who said he had gotten the PTS from looking at intelligence photos from the war. That is the Afghanistan war which he had earlier stated he had gotten out in 96.

    He was “homeless” but in his wallet was over $2000, he also stated that the VA would not help him because they had run out of money, or as he told us later he had used up his benefits with the VA.

          4) got into fight with some germans at a bar one night.

          I also had an uncle who was a Major in the Army. Well, a drum major in the Salvation Army, but that doesn’t sound as impressive.

Later that same summer, I had the opportunity to go to France as a volunteer chaparone for my old high school’s French class tour. We flew there in a plane. During the trip to France, we were able to spend a day at St. Mere Eglise.

            I now realize that I was, in fact, a paratrooper attached to the 1st Battalion, 507th PIR. I landed in France and was at St.Mere Eglise.

  23. Isn’t it illegal to lie to the military, whether it’s active duty, reserve, or national guard, when filling out official forms? How was he allowed into the national guard with a OTH discharge on his records? If he lied, then that would kinda negate any “honorable” discharge he received from the national guard; would it not?

    That would lead a rational person to reach the conclusion that he didn’t change his ways and judging by his reaction here, today, that he is working very hard to hide that fact. He can bluster all he wants about how he received an honorable discharge from the TN National Guard, but he joined them under less than honorable conditions, so that makes it a rather moot point and by bragging about it, he shines a light on that fact. Intelligence isn’t his strong suit.

    I will be out most of the day, tomorrow, because I will be at my VA appointments. The ones I earned with my honorable service.

  25. Aaron, why did the Tennessee National Guard involuntarily separate you? Di you not tell them about your OTH Discharge from the USMC? AR 135-178 is the Regulation for Administrative Separations for the Guard and Reserves. That is how you were put out, you did not complete a contract and ETS, you were tossed out, again.
    I am sure there is some National Guard Admin type who can sort out the exact reasons from the paperwork you provided.

No. Does this description create the impression that his disability/PTSD was service connected? Yes. Did he intend to create this impression. Most likely yes, in my opinion. Does pointing out that he received an OTH discharge from the USMC, and that he did not get PTSD in the service, constitute libel? Absolutely not.
