The pony-tailed one needs a military blogger

LGF's blunder2
LGF's blunder

The above picture was sent to us by one of our old blogging friends and it’s the post headline and photo from Little Green Footballs (yeah, I know, I had forgotten about them, too) and the guy in the hat is supposed to remind us of the Confederate South, somehow. But, just like everything else The Pony-Tailed One writes about the military, he’s just wrong. The rest of us recognize it as a Stetson, still worn in some cases by cavalry troops today. The line that was edited by Charles Johnson as a result of him being corrected by his commenters, before I could get there and get a screen shot of it, was that this gentleman was dressed as a Confederate General. No, a US Cavalry Lieutenant Colonel.

Back in the good old days, I used to help ol’ Chuck out on his military issues, but now, since he’s thrown us under the bus and decided that Janet Napolitano is right in her agency’s assessment of veterans, I get to sit back, point and laugh at his ignorance. Charles, stay in your lane.

ADDED: Our friend got a screenshot before I missed it;

And Charles still thinks that it’s Confederate;

LGF double down on the stupid

  1. He used to be mildly amusing and informative, then he snapped and went full retard. I still wonder what happened.

  2. I’ve seen many a gold cord on the stetsons of Troopers in the squadron in my formation. What’s with the black cord? Is it called a cord?

  3. Frosty I think it’s green, and for calling it a “cord” I think there is another name for it, but I never served in a (real) Cav unit so I don’t know for sure. fyi I servef in 1/9 Cav at Ft Hood in the 90s. but we were really a Mech Inf Unit

  4. Why do people have to use nazi symbols, it’s sick and has no place in any events today, unless it’s to show how horrible the nazis where for historical purposes.

  5. Every night when Chuckle’s mommie tucks him into bed, she has to reassure him that there are no Neo-Nazis, creationists, or Tea Partiers hiding under his bed.

  6. So, somehow using the SS runes do denote the IRS as a Nazi like organization means that those making the correlation are Nazis? I guess that I’ve completely missed something on the logic train.

  7. I had forgotten about LGF.
Used to read regularly, until he departed the rails.
    Very sad.

  8. To be honest, I think he’s possessed. Ever since he serially scorned Governor Jindal for taking his Catholicism seriously, he has been incredibly delusional.

  9. Here’s something on the cords:

While there is no doctrine governing the appearance of a Stetson, it will generally have the wearer’s rank set above the unit’s regimental crest on the front, with the regimental insignia on the back, and a different color cord around the brim depending on the wearer’s branch and MOS. Troopers with combat experience may tie “combat knots” in this cord. The most common cord colors are yellow for an enlisted 19D Cavalry Scout, black/gold for an armor officer, red/yellow for a vehicle mechanic, red for a medic, and blue for an infantryman.

  10. So it is O.K. for left wing a-holes to use pictures of George Bush wearing a Hitler moustache but let the Tea Party use Nazi imagery to scold the IRS and it rises to the level of the worst racism. Go away with your phony outrage. Nice try douche bag.

    1. Remember, MGySgtRet: for the left, Freedom of Speech means they’re free to speak and you’re free to listen to them.

  11. So it looks like the Tea Partiers are denouncing the IRS to Nazis, and Chuckles thinks that means the Tea Partiers are Nazis? LOL.

  12. @18: People on the left do stupid shit like that from time to time, yes… and others on the left call them out on it. You find nutjobs of all political persuasions. They’re rarely indicative of the group as a whole, even though that’s often what the opposing side wants to see.

  13. Its a Waffen SS Cowboy hat worn by Russian Cossacks that fought for the Germans.

  14. Oh, good lord! That dumb fucker is still alive???? I thought Little Green Fuckballs had disappeared into obscurity where it belonged!

  15. I have a bunch of Kipling books published in the ’20s and ’30s that have Indian swastikas on the spines….suppose I should hide them from this arschloch

  16. Comrades in Arms:

First of all, the guy in the photograph has done the very same thing I have, only my hat cord is gold.

Yes, I’m just a poor boy, so instead of spending a couple hundred dollars getting a genuine Cavalry stetson from a Cavalry web site, I went to Wal-Mart in Rexburg, Idaho (where EVERYBODY is a cowboy!) and bought the cheapest black cowboy hat on the rack, with a wide brim.

Actually, my purchase had nothing to do with the Cavalry, for I’m a disabled war veteran and my Cavalry unit wore black berets, not stetsons.

Being a Cavalry Scout (MOS 11 D 20), my active duty uniform included spurs and a “US” oval belt buckle on a plain, black leather garrison belt.

No, at the time, I was performing as a singer/songwriter with the Cowboy Poets of Idaho, and I was told to go buy some cowboy clothes, because when I was performing on stage, folks expected me to look like a cowboy.

So, just like that Light Colonel in the photograph, I ordered a yellow cord (which I learned to tie knots in), a large brass crossed sabres emblem, and a black leather chin strap, and that’s what I wear when I dress up on patriotic and/or military occasions.

Now, since that Light Colonel is a field grade Cavalry officer, I’m assuming he’s been more places than I have and has done much more stuff.

So, why ain’t HE got his hat cords tied in a knot, indicating combat service?

By the way, scouts wear silver Prince of Wales spurs, and after serving in combat, they wear gold colored spurs.

Currently, scouts must EARN the right to wear spurs by completing a series of arduous tests called a “Spur Ride”.

But, when I was in, there were no requirements, except having the MOS and being told to go to the PX and buy the spurs, belt buckle, and beret.

Secondly, one of the guys I eat chow with served in the 45th Infantry Division “Thunderbirds”, a unit of the Oklahoma National Guard, whose symbols are representative of American Indians.

Since the Second World War, their insignia depicts a Thunderbird.

Guess what their symbol was PRIOR to the Second World War?

    A “swastika” ! ! !

Actually, I think the American Indians call it something else.

The “Wheel of Life”, or “Eternal Wheel”, or whatever it’s called is a very ancient symbol of American Indians, and is also seen used in India.

The swastika, or whatever it’s name is, used to be featured on Arizona highway signs, and on a New Mexico motel whose units were shaped like tipis.

The Boy Scouts of America, which copies the American Indians, used to have the swastika as their special symbol, which I think was replaced by the Order of the Arrow.

The Finnish Air Force used the swastika LONG before Adolph Hitler came on the scene, and they still use it.

So, I think it’s more than time to take back that maligned symbol and restore it to its rightful place of honor as an ancient symbol of ancient peoples, with no meaning whatever regarding Nazis or the Third Reich.

Next, my ancestors served on BOTH sides of the War for Southern Independence, and I’m very proud of my Confederate ancestor, Corporal Jonathan Trueblood, North Carolina Seventh Regiment, Confederate Senior Reserve, whose son, William, also my ancestor, saw lots of action serving in a mounted infantry unit of the Union Army.

I won’t apologize for any of my ancestors who owned slaves, nor will I apologize for my Grampaw who told me there was a time when the Ku Klux Klan was the only law and order in Alabama.

Did you know it was a Black man who began slavery in America?

In addition to numerous Black slaveowners, did you know there were WHITE orphans kidnapped from Scotland and Ireland to be sold into slavery on the Carolina plantations?

One incident is documented in my family’s history, and I detected another incident when researching census records.

Don’t forget the Society of Knights Liberators to Free the White Slaves of Africa.

Oh, there’s MUCH more I could tell you, but that’s enough to pique your interest for now, without straying further from the subject.

Finally, PLEASE stop calling it the “Tea Party”!

It’s supposed to be the TEA Party.

“TEA” is an acronym whose initials mean, “Taxed Enough Already”.

Failing to correctly spell “TEA” as an acronym causes the original message and purpose to be forgotten and/or ignored.

I’m not a member of the TEA Party, and don’t even know anybody that’s amember of the TEA Party.

Personally, I think the TEA Party, which began as a good idea, giving all of us some hope, has unfortunately been successfully infiltrated and corrupted by the “same ol’, same ol'” RINO members of the Republican Party.

    Thank you.

  17. Meh, who gives a royal fahking crap anyway? Thanks to Tea Party Patriots inability to police their ranks and keep an eye out for this kind of shit, only serves to make the entire TEA Party movement look like the far left loons and MSM want ’em to look.

Fuck ’em. After almost ten years of helping plan, organize and man events on the local and national level and working so-called “conservative” websites, I’m in the mood to toss a match on the whole fucking works. Sick and tired of candidates, voters that don’t or won’t vote, don’t give a fuck about this country or those that are too fucking stoopid and lazy to educate themselves.

Hence the now popular vernacular: Low Information Voters

  18. Charles Johnson should be mindful of Kirk Lazarus’ advice to Tugg Speedman in Tropic Thunder.

  19. @27 Streetsweeper, you’re to be commended for your long-suffering attempt to do the right thing. Unfortunately, the wingnuts gravitated to the TEA Party early, and were in evidence very quickly when the local rallies started. I was horrified at some of our local rallies, because of the tin-foil-hat types that turned out. And, predictably, by the actions of the media and the liberals, they became the “face” of our local TEA Party–and quickly ruined both its message and legitimacy.

  20. John,

I like reading your blog letters. They are certainly entertaining if not half facts. Your question: “Did you know it was a Black man who began slavery in America” … That is a bit of a stretch. I might recommend that you take the white hood off your head occasionally and come up for some air.

  21. Left called Bush a Nazi for 8 years = Patriotic American
Right calls IRS Nazi’s because of gross criminal misuse of power entirely based upon politics = Nazi’s.

This country needs to be reset.

  22. Okay, I guess it’s time for some “inside Cavalry” insights on this whole Stetson-cord variations issue. Since the US Army currently only has one Cavalry Division, the best source for all things Cav is Fortress Hood, Texas. Most of my career was spent in SpecOps but I did do four years in 1st Cav including two commands so I know a little about what I’m saying.

The actual hat appears to be okay. Black Stetson or Stetson-like hat, 3″ brim and turned properly. The cord is correct for his rank. Company and Field Grade officers wear a black cord with gold ends. That’s regardless of branch, the cord color is determined by rank for officers. As far as knots in the cord; it is authorized but in no way distinguishes combat service.

Now the part where he’s ate up like a soup sandwich.

The rank and branch insignia are to be worn on the front of the hat centered with rank over branch insignia. Here’s where it gets kind of tricky. There is no Cavalry Branch in the US Army for officers. The Cavalry branch insignia he is wearing is like three times bigger than real insignia; some kind of Ranger Joe knock off bullshit. If it is some kind of embroidered insignia from the Civil War or Indian Wars, it is technically authorized but the official guidance specifically states: Care should be taken when selecting insignia to avoid gaudiness.

He could have chosen Regimental Insignia which is in fact crossed sabers but has numbers above and below the cross and is still way smaller than that “look at me” crap he’s wearing.

Lastly, I don’t think it’s appropriate to wear at a Tea Party Rally, especially when you consider that both Wesley Clark and Eric Shenseki commanded the 1st Cavalry.

And yes, 1st Cavalry does have a Memo of Instruction for the proper wear of the “Cav Hat”.

    http://www.1cda.org/cav_hat_moi.htm

BTW, mine is proudly displayed in our parlor as we speak.

  23. I say he should be sent to Texas, I’m sure the 1st Cav would be delighted to have some nice talk and counseling with him …

  24. MCPO NYC USN (Ret): while I often find some of John Malernee’s comments “retro” (to be charitable) and somewhat “Jim Crow” objectionable, on at least one point above he happens to be arguably correct.

The first legally-recognized slave owner (as opposed to holder of indentured servants) in the mainland English colonies in America does indeed appear to have been a Black man. His name was originally Antonio; he later Anglicanized it to Anthony Johnson. He originally came to the US from Angola as an indentured servant.

After acquiring his freedom at the end of his indenture, Johnson went on to become the owner of a sizable amount of land in the Eastern Shore region of Virginia. He also acquired several servants of his own.

Johnson later denied release to one of these servants, John Castor – also a black man – and proceeded to go to court so that he could hold Castor as a slave for life. A Virginia court decision established Johnson’s right to do this in 1655. Prior to that time, by law all Blacks in the British mainland American colonies had been legally recognized to be indentured servants and due their freedom on completion of their contracts. The decision in Johnson v. Castor established slavery as legal in the British mainland Colonies.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthony_Johnson_%28colonist%29

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Casor

Johnson also holds the distinction of being one of the first men documented to have been screwed over by the courts in America solely due to his race. When Johnson died, Virginia courts allowed much of his land to be confiscated by others on the grounds that due to his race he was “not a citizen” of the colony of Virginia. His descendants were allowed to retain only small holdings, and his grandson later lost that when he was unable to pay his taxes.

  25. @33 COB6

Now I have to ask, I’ve seen those hats around I’m guilty of having one myself *scratch head* guess I should make sure I don’t wear it and just leave it in my closet? I believe it has a number on top of the sables but not in the bottom.

Did I end up with a 1 Cav hat? (I bought it in Texas around 12 years ago but I love the way it looks so I keep it but not use it as I don’t want the strings to fade or break)

  26. Dear Hondo (cc’d to John in Ole’ MISS),

Regardless of the truthfullnessousismability of the story of the “very bad Black man”, my response was pure satire intended to only offend weak natured morons.

    That is all!

BTW … I never stop anywhere in DELMARVA. They are all scary!

  27. Why does anybody listen to what these libtards say? The crap they spew will rot your brain. Just as it has done to theirs. They know nothing and say less. Hot, putrid air is all that comes from them.

    Chief:

I’m disappointed that you would stoop to name calling, especially without any basis in fact.

You do realize, don’t you, that there is no Ku Klux Klan (that I’m aware of), and due to the combination of thorough FBI infiltration, plus public ridicule in the media, there hasn’t been one for quite a number of years.

Oh, there’s guys who drink alcohol and show off their KKK membership cards, but it means nothing, because they are powerless to do anything except talk.

Have you ever SEEN those guys?

Who would be so stupid as to publicly dress like a homosexual clown and cover themselves with prison tattoos?

Most of them can’t even read or write English coherently, even at the elementary school level.

So, even IF they existed, where’s their credibility?

Since you’re one of them there NORTHERN guys who watches television, I’ll bet you probnably think Abraham Lincoln was America’s greatest president and the purpose of the War Between the States was to free the slaves, correct?

That’s what them folks on television want you to think.

But, you have a computer, just as I do, so use it to do some research.

Did you know that even after the War Between the States ended, that slavery continued to exist in the Northern states?

Anyway, please do an Internet search for, “Anthony Johnson and John Casor”.

They were the FIRST slaveowner and slave in America, having originally come to Virginia as indentured servants, able to purchase their freedom, just as White people did.

Search for “Black slaveowners”, and see what you get.

South Carolina had more Black slaveowners than any other state.

As for kidnapped Scottish and Irish orphans sold into slavery in the Carolinas, that can be documented by the British Crown having outlawed the practice (although it continued, even after being outlawed), and by the famous novel, “KIDNAPPED”, by Robert Louis Stevenson, which also became a movie.

As I stated, one incident is documented in my own family’s history, where they helped escaping slaves on the Underground Railroad, and I found another one when researching United States census records for Kentucky.

And, yes, my ancestors also had been slaveowners, something for which I will not pass judgement on, since I didn’t live through those times.

Don’t forget to research, “Society of Knights Liberators of the White Slaves of Africa”.

I grew up in the segregated South during the misnamed “Civil Rights” movement, and as a typical idealistic youth wanting to change the World, I thought it was a great idea.

    But, that was then.

    This is now.

As it turns out, our ancestors were smarter than we are, for they had valid reasons for racial segregation.

In your Internet research, compare the lives of Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis.

Compare the reasons and goals of the American Revolutionary War for Independence with the similar necessity for Southern secession, and their own War for Independence.

Here’s another question to be considered:

WHY did Americans have to fight the bloddiest war in our nation’s history to allegedly “free the slaves”?

All the other countries ended their slavery without fighting a war.

Of course, in Africa today, they still practice slavery, along with cannibalism and witchcraft.

It’s all out there on the Internet, just a few keystrokes away.

    I ain’t no genius.

Shucks, I ain’t even very smart.

So, if’n I can do it, without stooping to meaningless name calling and/or empty knee jerk accusations, then I know you (and all the other guys here at this same web site) can easily do it.

Oh, by the way, when someone accuses me of being a “racist” (Oh, Horrors!), do you know what my reaction is?

I say, “Yes, I am. So, what?”

Being called epithets only means the accuser is unable to present a logical argument.

So, throw it right back in their face, and see what happens.

Actually, if the truth were admitted (which is now exceedingly rare), every one of us is bigoted, biased, and/or prejudiced, because it’s a natural survival instinct, usually acquired through years of observation and/or bitter personal experience.

    Thank you.

  29. HONDO:

    Thank you for posting that.

If I’d known you were going to submit that post, I wouldn’t have bothered with submitting mine, due to unnecessary redundancy.

But, I’m very, very SLOW at composition and typing, so, depending on the subject, and/or how controversial or interesting it might be, a lot of other stuff can be posted by a lot of other folks while I’m still tediously struggling to put together my one post.

Thus, my unnecessary redundancy duplicating your work.

    Hey, I just bought a new DVD for my library, starring John Wayne, called – – – , “HONDO” ! ! !

  30. @ #29-Pinto Nag: Thanks! As far infiltration in the local group here, thanks in huge part to our counter-protesting experiences in DC and elsewhere around the country, I have a definite knack for finding them and either isolating from the crowd (usually have more than a few volunteers helping) or let the po-po flat out run ’em off.

Other times mostly on both of the websites, I boot their asses out (IP ban for good measure) period. The majority have been Paulian loons, jonesbots, quaylebots, venturabots and so on. Proud to say not once have I had trouble from the real deal libertarians by the way.

I do see the obamabots or drones as well, some of those can be tricky finding. But, once I do they are not on the website for much longer than it takes to sort ’em out, lol. But the rest of it is pretty much dead on. I tire of people that hide behind employment, religion or say it doesn’t matter. Then they show up at local meetings bitching n bellyaching like a gut shot coyote.

  31. @ # 33 COB6

As a former scout in the First Cavalry Division, thank YOU, Sir, for posting that invaluable information ! ! !

As I previously stated, we didn’t have the stetson in my unit, but wore black berets.

And, not having much money, I can’t afford the regulation Cavalry stetson, so I wear the cheapest black, wide brimmed cowboy hat I could find at Wal-Mart, and just put the Cavalry insignia and accessories on it.

Again, thank you for posting that.

  32. #37
If the crossed sabers have a number on top and none on bottom that means you are with the Regimental HQ as opposed to any subordinate Battalion or Squadron which is what the bottom number indicates

  33. As for that idiot from LGF equating a Stetson to a Civil War hat, the Stetson Hat Co was founded in 1865 in Philadelphia. Too late for the war and certainly not southern.

  34. @46: The Cav Stetson is not an official part of the Army uniform. That said, you’re supposed to use discretion when wearing it outside of sanctioned functions and events associated with being a part of a cavalry unit.

I’ve worn my Stetson out in public, but I always take my rank off if I do and keep my crossed sabers on. It’s a hella nice hat to protect my grape from the sun’s harmful rays and I’m proud of my service in the Cav- I earned it, so I wear it when appropriate. But I’m on active duty so I steer clear of political rallies and the like as an active participant.

If that guy in the photo is retired O-5, pretty sure there’s nothing stopping him (legally) from wearing it (other than the fact that his acorns look a little grody hanging off the brim like that) and it attracts unwanted attention from the likes of LGF.

  35. Charley Johnson apparently went full bore… It was a sharp left turn, so all I can guess is he turned Muslim or married one…

  36. Kragar Wed, Jun 19, 2013 11:08:12am

For fun, ask a Neo-Confederate what should be done to terrorists who attack a US military base and declare they’re setting up their own country inside the US.

I really enjoy reading some of the supposedly intellectual responses from the like of whatever a Kragar is….

I would counter that for an equal amount of amusement one could ask a liberal how the h3ll we are supposed to pay for Obamacare….the responses tend to be silence, mindless blathering about the CBO….and something along the lines of: “We’ll just print more money”….

  37. John … from Mississippi … John … IT WAS SATIRE.

It was all in fun … and meant to get a laugh while inner-liberal was trying to make a point.

Easy day Brother … no offense intended. If I hurt your feelings or if your oversized bozer shorts are now in a bunch … I am sorry!

  38. John … one other thing! If I catch you southern boys enlaving any more Scottish or Irish kids down there … I will personally visit and bring that practice to an end!

Again … sorry if I piised you off!
